Bunte Adjusts Well to Transfer

Mammoth offensive lineman Erik Bunte recently made the move from Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita to Mission Viejo, and he says he's still very solid to UCLA...

The Diablos took down a solid Redlands East Valley (Calif.) last Friday 52-21 in a game where Mission Viejo pulled most of their starters out at halftime. Erik Bunte, who said he's now 6-8, 325 pounds and looks it, started at left tackle for the Diablos and had a solid half of football before retiring for the night.

"I've been at Mission for three weeks and it has been great so far," Bunte said. "I wasn't expecting to receive such a warm welcome by the team but it has been great. It's an honor to play here and I really feel comfortable and love it at Mission Viejo."

Bunte looked in pretty good shape and moved well for a big lineman. He went up against one of the state's top defensive ends in Kylie Fitts and was beaten out of his stance a couple of times but overall, handled himself well.

Bunte definitely has some ability and the key for him excelling at the next level will be how he continues to improve his feet and overall athleticism. It's not easy to move around such a big frame but Bunte looked light on his feet and plays with some leverage as well and it will be very interesting to watch him develop.

On the recruiting front, Bunte gave an early commitment to UCLA and said he's still as solid as ever.

"I'm very strong with UCLA," Bunte said. "I said a long time ago that I still wanted to take some trips and my mom wants me to get out and do that as well but UCLA is definitely where I want to be. I'm 100% solid with UCLA and very happy to be a Bruin.

"I still talk with Coach Klemm, the OL coach and I like the future of the program. I still want to enjoy the recruiting process and the experience of taking visits and right now, California and Arizona State have also offered me. Oregon State is showing some interest as well so that's where things are at right now."
