Prospect Preview: Week Seven

A number of big games involving UCLA prospects take place this weekend, including a big game in Los Angeles and one in the Valley...

Game of the Week: Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral vs. Gardena (Calif.) Serra
Serra has some of the top underclass talent in the state headlined by elite junior corner Adoree Jackson. Jackson was rated the No. 34 player in the nation in the 2014 Scout 300 and holds offers from Colorado, Nebraska, Northwestern, SMU, UCLA, Utah, and Washington. Fellow junior Dwight Williams was rated the No. 167 player in the Scout 300 and is one of the state's top linebackers. Colorado and UCLA have both offered. Junior quarterback Jalen Greene has been impressive this year and has a chance to be one of the state's top dual threat signal callers next fall. Speaking of quarterbacks, few can sling it like Cathedrals Hayden Rettig. The LSU commit has an absolute cannon and could be the best pure thrower in the state. Wide out DaMari Scott is a physical receiver with speed and claims offers from Boston College, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada and San Diego State. Two-way athlete Torry McTyer can play receiver or corner in college and just landed an offer from California a week ago.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei vs. Santa Margarita (Calif.)
Santa Margarita's lost to Mater Dei last year, a surprising loss en route to their CIF-SS and state titles.  This year, though, they'll have to face the Monarchs without Johnny Stanton, and the Monarchs are much improved from a year ago.  Mater Dei is led by four-star tight end Thomas Duarte, who is one of UCLA's top targets at tight end, as well as 2014 Scout 300 member Jonathan Lockett.  The Eagles are no longer led by Stanton, out for the year with a knee injury, but still have plenty of talent, including UCLA target Riley Sorenson on the offensive line, Washington commit Dane Crane, Arizona State commit Nick Begg and Washington commit Connor O'Brien.

Encino (Calif.) Crespi vs. Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame
Crespi vs. Notre Dame, one of the best rivalry games in Southern California, will once again feature several big-time college prospects on both sides of the ball. UCLA recruit and speedy tailback Khalfni Muhammad, who is coming off a four touchdown performance last week, three-star quarterback Kelly Hilinski and 2014 WR/DB Koa Farmer will face a stiff challenge from Crespi's star-studded defense. The Celts defense is led by four-star safety Tyler Foreman, who is one of the most physical defensive backs in the region and has double-digit scholarship offers, including UCLA in his top two. Fellow safety Brandon Arnold is another highly sought after recruit and has serious interest in Cal and Michigan State. Defensive end Ray Davison should also have a big impact on Friday as well. On the offensive side of the ball, keep an eye on Crespi wide receiver Jabrian Blackwell and 2015 tailback Okalani Langi.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian vs. Burbank (Calif.) Bellarmine-Jefferson
Salesian is one of the most loaded small-school programs in the Southland, with one BCS commit, two 2014 BCS prospects and one of the best quarterbacks in Southern Section. UCLA commit Jermaine Kelly, a cornerback/receiver who can do it all for the Mustangs, is one of their chief two-way threats. Getting him the ball will be pound-for-pound, the strongest armed quarterback in the West, Jihad Vercher, who had a huge game the last two weeks. The Mustangs also feature a pair of top 2014 prospects in Marquis Ware, who plays tight end and linebacker and is nearing double-digit offers as well as Jamardre Cobb, a two-way threat who also has a number of offers.

Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe vs. Yuma (Ariz.) Kofa
UCLA commit, offensive lineman Kenny Lacy, and UCLA 2014 offer target Jalen Brown, one of the top receivers in the West, look to improve to 7-1 on the 2012 season when they take on Kofa.

Orange (Calif.) Lutheran vs. Anaheim (Calif.) Servite
Featuring UCLA commit John Lopez on the offensive line, the Lancers take on Servite, and look to win their first Trinity League game.  They'll face a Servite team that is scuffling after winning the last three Trinity League titles outright.

Fresno (Calif.) Central vs. Clovis (Calif.)
The vaunted Fresno Central secondary features UCLA target Johnny Johnson at one corner, Bruin target L.J. Moore at another corner and Hatari Byrd, who committed to Oklahoma, but whom UCLA is still recruiting.  The Tigers also feature a 2014 prospect with a UCLA offer, receiver Michiah Quick and three other underclassmen they're watching, safety Devon Brewer, defensive lineman Tashon Smallwood and running back Nick Wilson.  All four are members of the Scout 300 for 2014.

Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde vs. Moreno Valley (Calif.) Canyon Springs
Rancho Verde, led by UCLA commit Poasi Moala and four-star receiver Demorea Stringfellow, take on crosstown foe Canyon Springs.

Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial vs. Glendale (Ariz.) Independence
Centennial boasts two Pac-12 commitments, in UCLA running back commit, Jalen Ortiz, and Washington defensive end commit, Marcus Farria. Other players to watch on this squad are: quarterback Tre Grant, wide receiver Shawn Poindexter, defensive end Sam Ray, linebacker Wes Westbrook, long snapper Reed Buce, and junior wide receivers Darius Aguirre and Keesean Green.

Rialto (Calif.) Carter vs. Rialto (Calif.)
Carter features one of the nation's best defensive tackles in UCLA commitment Kenneth Clark. At 6'2/295 Clark took some reps playing middle linebacker at 7v7s last summer, and he was athletic enough to be comfortable there. He's more than Rialto will be able to handle.

Bellevue (Wash.) vs. Snoqualmie (Wash.) Mount Si
Bellevue is loaded with talent, starting with UCLA commit and four-star outside linebacker Myles Jack. 2014 athlete Budda Baker is the top ranked player in his class in the Northwest region and already boasts a double digit offer list, including one from UCLA, and he was at UCLA's home game against Oregon State earlier this season.

Other UCLA Commits in Action
Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw and UCLA commit Mossi Johnson take on Los Angeles (Calif.) Locke.  Encinitas (Calif.) La Costa Canyon and commit Scott Quessenberry meet Carlsbad (Calif.).  Fallbrook (Calif.) offensive tackle Sean Dowling plays Oceanside (Calif.) El Camino.  Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian and UCLA commit Cameron Judge have a bye this weekend.  Long Beach (Calif.) Poly and UCLA commit Jayon Brown have a bye.

Thursday Results
Memphis (Tenn.) East offensive tackle Christian Morris, a UCLA commit, lost to Memphis (Tenn.) White Station, 42-6. Missouri City (Texas) Marshall linebacker Deon Hollins defeated Houston (Tex.) Stratford, 42-31.
