Alfieri's Heart On Defense

The Portland (Ore.) Jesuit 2014 fullback/linebacker, Joey Alfieri, is hoping to play defense in college...

Portland (Ore.) Jesuit linebacker Joey Alfieri (6-3, 210), has been one of the underclass bright spots on one of the more talented teams in the Northwest.

With a lineup that features three BCS offensive lineman, Alfieri is a two-way prospect in the 2014 class for the Crusaders, playing both linebacker and fullback.

But linebacker is where Alfieri's heart is and where most of the interest is coming from.

"I talk to a lot of Pac-12 schools, and went to the Oregon-Washington game with my teammate Doug Brenner (an Oregon commit) and a couple of other schools are interested," said Alfieri. "I've been talking to Oregon State, UCLA, Nebraska, Missouri, Washington and Washington State."

Alfieri said he's getting a handful of handwritten letters, which has impressed him.

"The contact has been great getting handwritten letters from coaches, that means a lot," said Alfieri. "We also had Oregon State and UCLA coaches at my game (against Aloha)."

It was in that Aloha game that Alfieri showed why he's a prospect to remember in the 2014 class, starring on defense, with an interception and a forced fumble, and helping the Crusaders hold five-star running back Thomas Tyner to under 100 yards.

"That game was such a breakthrough game for our team, we were feeding off the energy," said Alfieri. "The biggest thing for us was trusting our teammates, doing our job, and making sure we knew our other teammates would do their job. Thomas is a great player and we know we had to stop him so we just tackled him and made sure we didn't let him get any big plays."

Offensively, he had a pair of scores, but defense is what he sees himself playing in college.

"Linebacker is my favorite position but I'm considering both positions," said Alfieri. "I just see myself playing linebacker in college."
