Prospect Preview: Week Eleven

The playoffs get underway this weekend and there are some marquee matchups involving UCLA commits and recruits...

Game of the Week: Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe vs. Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain
This game is loaded with UCLA prospects and also includes a Bruin verbal.  Mountain Pointe's top prospect is UCLA commit Kenny Lacy, an offensive lineman, and he's joined by 2014 prospect Natrell Curtis, who will visit UCLA unofficially next week, as well as do-everything two-way player Jalen Browne.  Desert Mountain has quarterback Kyle Allen, a 2014 prospect that UCLA has already offered and receiver Mark Andrews, who UCLA has also offered.

La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat at Long Beach (Calif.) Poly
Amat is led by explosive two-way standout Darren Andrews, a Duke commit. Andrews could play on either side of the ball in college but was recruited to play receiver by most programs. UCLA just offered Andrews. Running back/safety Dionza Blue is another two-way standout with the talent to play multiple positions in college. San Diego State has offered Blue as a DB. After starting the year 1-3, Poly reeled off six straight wins to close out the season. Washington State commit Gerard Wicks is one of the state's top running backs. Linebacker Jayon Brown, a UCLA commit, could end up at safety in college. Safety David Price is back from injuries and has offers from Arizona, Colorado and SMU and sophomore corner Iman Marshall is one of the best 10th graders in the entire west region.

Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian at Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame
Both teams feature players UCLA has offered and Oaks Christian has a Bruin commit.  The Knights are led by Khalfani Muhammad, the 2013 running back that UCLA has offered as well as quarterback Kelly Hilinski, who camped at UCLA.  Oaks Christian has Bruin commit Cameron Judge leading their defense at linebacker, 2014 quarterback Brandon Dawkins and 2015 prospect Darick Holmes at receiver (and owner of a UCLA offer) as well as 2015 lineman Reno Rosene.

Redlands (Calif.) at Chino Hills (Calif.)
UCLA commit Craig Lee was limited last week with a shoulder injury, but the Terriers will need him in their first round playoff game with Chino Hills.  When healthy, Lee has been as good as any back in the West this year.  Chino Hills' top player is Boise State commit Jack Austin at receiver.

West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade vs. Oxnard (Calif.) Pacifica
UCLA offered Chaminade running back Terrell Newby last month and he and the Eagles take on Pacifica in a first round playoff game in the CIF-SS Western Division, where the Eagles are the #2 seed.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw vs. Arleta (Calif.)
The Cougars look to make some noise in the City Section playoffs, and keep their outside chances at the state bowl game alive.  Led by UCLA commit Mossi Johnson and Utah verbal Dominique Hatfield (who UCLA has offered), the Cougars face Arleta in the first round.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian vs. Capistrano Valley (Calif.) Christian
UCLA commit Jermaine Kelly and targets in 2014 Marquis Ware, Jamardre Cobb and Rodney Carr, lead a loaded Salesian team that is geared for a big run in the CIF-SS Northeast Division playoffs.

Fresno (Calif.) Central vs. Tulare (Calif.) Union
The Tigers are hoping to get their playoff run started right against Tulare Union.  Fresno Central is led by UCLA cornerback prospect Johnny Johnson and the West's top prospect in 2014, receiver Michiah Quick, who UCLA has also offered.

Other UCLA Commits in Action
Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial and UCLA verbal Jalen Ortiz meet Goodyear (Ariz.) Millennium in the second round of the state playoffs.  Bellevue (Wash.) and UCLA pledge Myles Jack meet Fernadle (Wash.) in the first round of the Washington 3A state playoffs.  Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde and UCLA verbal Poasi Moala take on Ontario (Calif.) Chaffey in first round playoff action.  Rialto (Calif.) Carter and UCLA verbal Kenneth Clark face Riverside (Calif.) La Sierra in the first round of the CIF-SS Eastern Division playoffs. Encinitas (Calif.) La Costa Canyon and Scott Quessenberry have a first round bye and play the winner of Rancho Bernardo/Valhalla next week.
