Kelly Reiterates: Solid to UCLA

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian defensive back Jermaine Kelly has a few more official visits lined up but said his commitment to UCLA is more solid than ever...

Jermaine Kelly has been as impressive as just about any skill player in the state this year, on both sides of the ball. Despite missing four games with a broken bone in his hand, he has put up some big numbers.

"On offense, I have 10 touchdowns but it would be 17, seven were called back because of penalties," Kelly said. "I also have seven interceptions on defense. It's definitely disappointing to have missed so many games but I'm really happy with how I've played and now we're just trying to go out and win a championship.

"We have one loss but have been beating up everyone else by at least three touchdowns. If we can make it in to the state championship game, that would be a dream come true. That's what we've been training for all season so hopefully we can win out and make that happen."

Kelly committed to UCLA back in the summer but that has only made other schools recruit him harder. He took an official visit to Washington in September, has two more scheduled and had USC come by the school on Monday.

"I really thought things would slow down after I committed," Kelly said. "Things have actually picked up. I'm going to take some trips but UCLA is fine with that. They said as long as they get the last one, they're ok with it. "I'm going to Boise State (Dec. 7) and Houston (Dec. 14).

"I'm still buzzing about the UCLA-USC game on Saturday. It's funny, when I first committed to UCLA, I had so many people asking me what I was thinking. Some even laughed about it but no one is laughing now. I believed in UCLA early on, even before they started winning but I was even surprised at how fast Mora was able to turn things around. I look at the team with two senior corners leaving, a great coaching staff, in a great area with great academics, why would you want to go anywhere else."

With USC jumping in the picture, could the Trojans sway Kelly in his decision?

"USC came by the school Monday to watch me work out," Kelly said. "I camped with them in the summer and USC is a great school but I'm a Bruin. No one is going to change my mind right now.

"UCLA is the perfect fit for me in every way and you have to love the direction the program is going. I seriously haven't stopped smiling since leaving the Rose Bowl. We have a great class coming in too, our DB class is going to be loaded and I'm just really excited about what is happening over there."

Ironically, Kelly will be at UCLA's cross town rival USC this weekend when the Trojans host Notre Dame.

"My dad has a lot of friends that are big Notre Dame fans," Kelly said. "We're all going together, the tickets were bought a long time ago. I'm sure people on the internet will try and read in to this and think I'm choosing the USC game over the UCLA game but that's not it. I'm just going with my dad and our family, that's all there is to it I promise."
