Still, when UCLA offered him last month, he didn't need a lot of time to think about it, committing to the Bruins not long after.
This weekend, Barker got to take his official visit to UCLA, seeing much more of the school as well as taking in a game at the Rose Bowl, which will be his home on Saturday's for the next few years.
"I loved my trip," said Barker. "I was able to get a feel for the school and the guys. I toured the campus a little more in depth, toured the facilities and it was awesome."
Barker was hosted by Darius Bell and also talked with fellow Utah native Xavier Su'a-Filo some.
"Darius was my host and it was fun kicking it with him on the visit," said Barker. "And I talked to Xavier and he just talked about getting used to being in California from Utah and we talked for a little bit."
Barker said that UCLA coaches like his versatility, able to split out wide or play inside.
"They said they're not really sure if they're going to put me at the Y," said Barker. "They think I could play either outside or inside receiver. I did like watching Joe Fauria though."
Barker also got to chat with offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and inside receivers coach Marques Tuiasosopo at length.
"I like Coach Mazzone and Coach Tui, they're both great coaches," said Barker. "They're running a great offense and it was cool getting to talk with the coaches and cool to get a feel for them."
Barker, who is LDS, said he doesn't have plans at this point to serve a mission.
"I don't think I will go on one," said Barker. "It's something later on down the road I could consider, but I want to go to college and start playing."
Barker said the atmosphere at the Rose Bowl was something he couldn't wait to be a part of.
"The Rose Bowl was crazy," said Barker. "I've never been in a stadium with that many people. I'm excited and I can't wait to get there."
Barker also said the Bruin offense is an appealing one that he's excited to be playing in.
"It's exciting to know that I'll be going there to be a part of that, with Brett Hundley being only a freshman right now," said Barker. "I really liked it a lot."
Barker had a chance to talk with head coach Jim Mora, and also was able to be in the locker room at the conclusion of the game.
"I came in towards the end of the talk and the guys were all excited," said Barker. "It was pretty fun."
