A big win at the Chicago Elite Classic over Westchester (Ill.) St. Joseph's started the season off right for Mater Dei, one that Johnson hopes goes for a long time.
"Being here at the Chicago Elite Classic was really good," said Johnson. "We got the win and that was what we came out here to do, get the win."
He continued, "All I am worried about is a CIF Championship. No individual awards or anything else, I am just worried about winning games."
Recruiting-wise the number of schools after him is so lenghy that he keeps a handy list on his phone.
"I am hearing from Syracuse, Arizona, Kentucky, UCLA, USC, Florida, San Diego State, Washington, Stanford, Louisville, North Carolina State, Texas, Florida State, UNLV, Oregon, and Colorado," said Johnson."
In terms of visits, Arizona, USC, and UCLA have all received unofficial trips.
The visit to Arizona happened in October and it is one that definitely left a big impression on the junior forward.
"It was a good campus," said Johnson of Arizona. "The school spirit is crazy there. I went to the Red-Blue game which is a ‘Mid-day Madness' and it was packed. I was like wow because it was a scrimmage. The coaches are great guys as well and they showed me on tape how I would fit in, and they are doing a great job of recruiting me."
Also living in Los Angeles, it has been easy for him to get to USC and UCLA and track both programs.
"They are both great schools that have great coaches," Johnson explained. "I really love both coaches. I know I could fit in on the wing at either school and I am looking at them. They are struggling right now, but I think they will get it turned around."
One school not on the West Coast really picking up the interest in Johnson is Kentucky. The Wildcats have made it known that he is a top priority for them.
"From what coaches have told me I am their No. 1 target at the wing spot," said Johnson of UK. "I could fit in like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist did last year. I could fit in and play defense, bring toughness, and defend and that is the main thing. He is doing a good job of recruiting me."
For now Johnson is focused on his season, and is just trying to win and improve on his all-around game.
