VISALIA, Calif. -- Terrell Newby had a very close relationship with former California running backs coach Ron Gould. When he found out that Gould would not be retained by the Bears' new head coach, Sonny Dykes, he all but dropped Cal from his final list.
"They were totally out of my recruiting process once he was gone," Newby said on Friday. "But, when coach [Pierre] Ingram came by, he started making a push."
After a two-hour in-school visit from the Bears' new running backs coach Pierre Ingram, Newby was intrigued by Cal once again, mainly due to the energy that Ingram brought.
"He's a cool dude. I like him. He's a young coach -- like, 20-something -- so he's bringing something new to the program, and that's what I'm looking for."
Newby will make his official visit to Berkeley on January 18, thanks in large part to the hard sell from Ingram.
"It's an easier offense; I know they used to run the pro, but he was basically saying that I'd fit in easier," Newby said.
That's not to say, however, that Cal occupies the place it once did atop Newby's list. The Bears currently are on the outside looking in for Newby, who lists Oregon, Nebraska and UCLA as his top three.
"UCLA is new -- Jim Mora is doing some great things -- and I think I could fit right where [Jonathan] Franklin is leaving off," Newby said. "Oregon is fast tempo, like what we're running now at Chaminade, so I'd be able to fit in, quickly. Nebraska, I like the people over there, the coaches. I went on an official over there, and everything was nice."
Newby will visit Westwood on Jan. 11, then Berkeley and then Eugene, in the succeeding weeks.
