Mixon Shines at Army AA Combine

Although it's still very early, it might be tough to find a better running back in the 2014 West Coast class than Oakley (Calif.) Freedom's Joe Mixon...

Joe Mixon is a big back with power and speed. He can run between the tackles and is a downhill runner but he's far from a plodder and can get outside as well.

Mixon took part in the recent Army All-American combine and was easily among the top players in attendance.

"This was a real good event, I liked the competition a lot," Mixon said following the event. I measured in at 6-1, 201 pounds, ran a 4.68-40 (electronic) and jumped 33 inches in the vertical so I was happy with how I did. I wanted to come out and show my skills and I think I did that.

"I've been working hard all-off-season to get bigger and stronger. I'm trying to bulk up a little and then I'll be running track to increase my speed. I ran a 10.9-100m last year along with a 21.8-200m and I was also on the 4X100m relay team and I plan to do all those events again this year."

Mixon said he'll be active this spring checking out colleges and doing summer camp.

"I for sure want to go to the NIKE Camp because I want to be invited to The Opening," Mixon said. "I want to do a bunch of Junior Days as well. I think I'll be going to Arizona State and Washington and maybe Nebraska. I also want to get out to Michigan if I can as well.

"Michigan was the last school that offered and I was really excited about that one. They're a great program and they'll be in it for sure. I also have offers from Oregon State, Washington, Colorado, California and ASU. Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, USC and UCLA are showing strong interest. I'm going to try and visit USC and UCLA over the summer and I'm sure I'll check out Cal again too."

Mixon has already visited Cal and the Bears made a strong impression.

"Cal treated me great, they made me feel like I was part of the family already," Mixon said. "That was the old staff but Coach Dykes has already reached out to me on facebook and he actually knows my uncle so there's a connection there.

"Oregon State had a great year and I was really impressed with them this year. I like Washington too and of course Michigan, those are the ones standing out right now. I want to go through the process and take all my official visits before making a decision.

"I at least want to take three but it would be great if I can get in all five. Hopefully I can take them all during the season so I can see the game atmosphere and see what the school is all about. I want to play as a true freshman and that will be a big factor. Academics are big too, I plan on majoring in Business Management so I'll be looking to see who can provide a great education for me."
