Cheatham Sees UCLA in New Light

Zylan Cheatham, the 6-7 junior post from Phoenix, who has some Pac-12 offers, updates us on his recruitment, and reacts to the hiring of Steve Alford...

The 2014 Phoenix (Ariz.) Westwind Prep power forward, Zylan Cheatham, is considered one of the top forwards in the west for his class.

Arizona has been on Cheatham for a while now and UCLA will likely enter the recruitment now that Steve Alford is the head coach.

"Coach Alford going to UCLA is definitely a good thing," Cheatham said. "He's been recruiting me and we've developed a pretty good relationship.

"He had a bunch of good teams at New Mexico and now that he's at UCLA, he's probably going to be getting even better players. I haven't heard from him since the hire, but I'm sure he will be in touch in the next few days."

Cheatham is still looking at all options and one of them includes Arizona.

"I like everyone recruiting me, but I'm going to have to start narrowing the list in a little bit," Cheatham said. "I just got new offers from Nebraska, Arkansas, ASU, and Utah and Colorado have offered from the Pac-12. Arizona, while having not offered yet, has been in steady contact and could be a serious competitor for him.

"They didn't offer me yet or anything, but said they are going to be watching me closely and that an offer could be coming," Cheatham said. "I'm very familiar with the program, though.

"I've been down there a couple times and it has always been a good time. It would be cool to get an offer from Arizona with all the good things going on down there."

In terms of a time frame for a decision, Cheatham said, "I still want to decide on my birthday in November, so it's not that far off."
