Bruins Will Check Out Downs

The nation's top fullback, Mountlake Terrace (Wash.) fullback Devante Downs, will have UCLA by in May...

Mountlake Terrace (Wash.) athlete Devante Downs (6-2.5, 230), isn't letting the craziness of the recruiting process wear him down yet.

"It's still exciting, but I'm getting on the downside of it and want to get things narrowed down," said Downs. "I have probably eight schools I'll want to keep talking to. But I'm also leaving some schools that haven't offered open yet."

Downs has offers from Stanford, Washington, Washington State, Utah, Arizona State, Arizona, California, Oregon State, Boise State, Vanderbilt and Colorado State.

"Wisconsin is coming to see me, UCLA is coming the first week of May, I'm talking with Tennessee, USC is talking with me a lot too and Michigan, coach (Dan) Ferrigno and Coach (Greg) Mattison said they were going to come by," said Downs. "So I'm waiting to see what happens there."

Downs said that of his offers, three schools are recruiting him the hardest.

"Stanford, Washington and Arizona State are all recruiting me really hard," said Downs. "Stanford came by this week, Coach (Randy) Hart came by. Oregon State was the first one to call me on Monday too."

Downs plans to visit Washington this weekend for the Huskies' Spring Game.

Next month, Downs plans to visit the Bay Area schools.

"I'm going to the Nike Camp in Oakland in May and I'm going to take an unofficial visit to Cal and to Stanford," said Downs.

Downs, ranked by Scout as the top fullback in the 2014 class, said his offers range from running back to linebacker.

"At the beginning, it was mostly running back, but more lately, its linebacker," said Downs. "Every school that talks with me, it's something different. I'll see how I develop at the end of the year, and if I get bigger, I'll play linebacker. If I play linebacker, I want to be in a 3-4 and play like (UCLA linebacker) Anthony Barr."

Downs has been invited to the U.S. Army Bowl, and he's thrilled for that opportunity.

"It was crazy when I was invited, especially being from my school that's not a powerhouse," said Downs. "When I was there for the combine, I always knew that's where I wanted to be. I just never expected to."

Now that he's set to be in San Antonio for New Year's, an announcement could come then.

"Right now, I'd like to decide at the Army Bowl, but if I see somewhere I love before, I'll commit before then," said Downs. "For sure, I'll take all five visits, but I don't think I can make a decision if I haven't seen everyone."

Downs is carrying a 3.6 and already scored a 1650 on the SAT.

"I'm going to take it again next month and I know I can get an 1800 on it," said Downs.
