UCLA Offers 2015 Linebacker

2015 Macon (Ga.) Macon County linebacker Roquan Smith earned a UCLA offer on Friday from linebackers coach Jeff Ulbrich...

UCLA became the first school to offer Roquan Smith a scholarship on Friday. Smith couldn't be happier.

"It really feels good to get that first offer," Smith told Scout. "I did not think I would get an offer this early, so it is exciting. I am definitely excited about it."

A UCLA assistant coach delivered the news to the 6-foot-1, 196 pound sophomore out of Macon (Ga.) Macon County.

"The coach called my head coach first and talked to him about it, then I got to talk to him on my coach's phone. I talked to Coach Jeff Ulbrich and he told me that I impressed him on film, that he is offering me right now, and that I am the first guy that plays inside linebacker that UCLA has offered in the 2015 class."

The Bruins had sent a few pieces of mail to Smith, but he did not see an offer coming.

UCLA being first to offer has put them on Smith's list even though he does not know much about them.

"All I really know so far is that Jim Mora is the head coach. I know he used to coach the Atlanta Falcons because I live here in Georgia. I do have some interest in them now that they have offered me."

Smith thinks an SEC school could be next.

"Coach [Derrick] Ansley from Kentucky came by the school this week and I think Kentucky will offer me soon. I have talked to him and he said he has to talk to the head coach and that I could be offered on Tuesday."

He finished with 112 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and six sacks in 2012.
