West Recruiting Notebook

A look at the latest news and notes from out West in this week's notebook...

An Early Start

Two freshman in Southern California, from traditional powerhouse programs, were offered last week by BCS programs.

Gardena (Calif.) Serra safety Brandon Burton was offered by both Utah and Florida State.

And Utah also offered Long Beach (Calif.) Poly safety Micah Croom.

It's only 33 months until they can sign a letter of intent in February of 2016.

Vols Busy in Golden State

Tennessee always recruited the West hard under head coach Phillip Fulmer.

In fact, since Tee Martin graduated after the 1999 season, the Vols have had their primary starting quarterback be from the West in 11 of 13 seasons, with Casey Clausen (California), Rick Clausen (California), Erik Ainge (Oregon) and Tyler Bray (California) running the offense for the majority of the years, save the Jonathan Crompton years.

Ironically, Martin is now in California, coaching at USC, and spurning the chance to go back to Knoxville in the offseason.  But the Vols are still trying to take folks out of California, and offered a whole handful of players in the last week, including a number of 2015 prospects such as Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco quarterback Josh Rosen, Gardena (Calif.) Serra teammates John Houston and Rasheem Green, Orange (Calif.) Lutheran defensive and Keisean Lucier-South and Long Beach (Calif.) Poly defensive back Iman Marshall.

The Vols have a three-year starter in Byron Moore who hails from California, a former four-star at Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne and Bray, from Kingsburg (Calif.), just left for the NFL after three years behind center.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei cornerback Jonathan Lockett became the seventh player from the West invited to The Opening in Beaverton this summer.  Kyle Allen, the nation's top quarterback, was invited last weekend to The Opening and Elite 11, after an MVP performance at the Chicago NFTC and Elite 11.  Those two join Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco cornerback Naijiel Hale, Lompoc (Calif.) defensive tackle Ainuu Taua, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Damien Mama, Corona (Calif.) Centennial offensive lineman Viane Talamaivao and Gardena (Calif.) Serra linebacker Dwight Williams.

John Plattenburg - CB - Corona (Calif.) Centennial - 2014
When March came around, Plattenburg didn't have an offer.  Now, he's in double-digits, with seven from the Pac-12, and more could be coming after several coaching staff's were at Centennial this past week for the Husky's College Showcase. He's been stellar all spring on the camp and 7on7 circuit.
