Focus 2015: Rickey Preston

Louisiana's 2014 group of WRs is well-renowned, and the 2015 group is even deeper. One of the best is Hahnville wide-out Rickey Preston...

Hahnville sophomore Rickey Preston served notice of his ability last fall.

"I caught eight touchdowns during the regular season and two during the playoffs," Preston said. "I had 600 yards for the season.

"My best games were against East Saint John, Lutcher, St. Augustine and St. Paul's. Against St. Paul's, I had 100 yards receiving with a TD. In the ESJ game, I had eight catches with a TD. I caught a 50-yard TD versus Lutcher and had a 42-yard kick return."

In the St. Aug contest, Preston scored on a 33-yard reception and also intercepted two passes.

The 6-0, 180-pounder was timed at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the National Underclassmen Combine earlier this year.

"I like UCLA, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Tulane and Oklahoma," he said. "I like UCLA because they're real balanced on offense. They want me as an athlete.

"Coach John Simon is recruiting me for Southern Miss. He wants me to come to camp in June. I'm going to camp there, and LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss."

Hahnville went 6-5 last year. The Tigers, led by head coach Lou Valdin, entered the Class 5A bracket as a No. 23 seed, but pulled off a 25-21 upset of 10th-seeded St. Paul's in the postseason opener.

The Tigers narrowly missed an upset of seventh-seeded Parkway in the second round (31-28 final score).

Hahnville began the season with four consecutive losses, although the team showed character by rebounding to reel off five straight wins in district competition.
