Freeman's Still on Course After USC Offer

Imperial (Calif.) running back Royce Freeman received an offer from USC Wednesday, and he talked excitedly about it, but the talented prospect still has a plan for his recruitment...

Royce Freeman is one of the nation's premier power backs and is a top five back in the region. He's a big, physical runner with better speed than given credit for and was one of the most impressive players we saw, regardless of position, at the SoCal NIKE Camp.

On the recruiting front, Freeman added a big offer to his list from one of his early favorites.

"USC offered me today," Freeman said. "Coach Summers came out to my school last week and it sounded like they were close to offering. I talked with Coach Kiffin today and he told me they liked me a lot and wanted to offer so that was big news for sure.

"Coach Kiffin said they watched my film and said I would be an ideal back in their system. He liked my size and said I have great balance and feet for a big back. They're only taking one running back in this class so the offer means a lot. It shows how much they want me and I'm definitely interested in them."

Freeman has been consistent in saying he's open to all schools and not ready to name favorites and that is still the case after the Trojan offer.

"I'm going to wait until after spring ball before I narrow my list," Freeman said. "We still have coaches coming by so I can't really narrow my list until I see who is interested and who else might want to offer. Once I see who is interested, then I'll be able to cut my list down and go from there.

"I'm going to take some visits in the summer. I'm planning to camp with Oregon and I also want to visit UCLA. I've been to the Rose Bowl before but have never been to their campus. I went to USC's Junior Day and know them pretty well so I think it would be good to check out UCLA as well."

As for a timeline for making a decision, Freeman said he's open to an early or late commitment.

"Whenever I feel like I know where I want to go, I'll go ahead and do it," Freeman said. "I'm not going to drag it out just to do it. I'm going to take my time and make sure I'm doing the right thing but when I think when you know you know and for me, once I know, that will be it.

"I'm looking for a place with a great environment that feels like home. I want to have a good relationship with my position coach and be at a place where it just feels comfortable for me. Right now, I talk with coach Campbell at Oregon and Coach White at Florida the most and have a great relationship with those guys.

"I can just call them up anytime and have a regular conversation and that's important to me. I want to be able to have a coach that is more than just a football coach to me and right now, those two coaches definitely stand out for me."
