Mixon Earns Golden Ticket

Oakley (Calif.) Freedom running back Joe Mixon (6-2, 208), was one of the top performers at the Oakland NFTC, but the West's top back was his own harshest critic.

"I felt like I did ok," said Mixon. "I think I could have done better, finishing wise. I started off good and started hurting, but I did ok."

Still, Mixon had a highlight reel run in the running back-linebacker drills, juking four-star linebackers D.J. Calhoun and Michael Lazarus both, with the audience showing their approval.

And Mixon earned a coveted spot in The Opening in June.

"I'm excited about The Opening," said Mixon. "That's been my big goal."

With nearly 50 offers to choose from, and a list he trimmed to 16, Mixon is ready for the next cut of his list.

"I'm waiting to talk with my coach and my dad to go through the list, but probably sometime in the next few weeks, I'll narrow it down to a top ten, and then decide my five official visits," said Mixon.

Mixon said a half-dozen schools had been recruiting him the hardest.

"I'd say Georgia, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, California and Washington have been recruiting me the hardest," said Mixon, who's also visited USC and UCLA this spring as well as Washington and nearby Cal.

Since Mixon set his list to 16, new offers came in so Mixon said those new offers would be considered when he trims his list.

"Maybe in the next three weeks, I'll have the list down to ten," said Mixon.
