West Recruiting Notebook

A look at the latest news and notes from out West in this week's notebook...

Oakland NFTC Stars

The second stop out West on the Nike Football Training Camp tour saw eight more prospects earn an invitation to The Opening.

San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep quarterback K.J. Carta Samuels punched his ticket to the Elite 11 Finals and The Opening with a great weekend, starring at the Elite 11 Regional in San Francisco then following up with a solid showing at the Oakland NFTC.

The West's top running back, Oakley (Calif.) Freedom's Joe Mixon, top receiver, Fresno (Calif.) Central's Michiah Quick and top tight end, South Jordan (Utah) Bingham's Dalton Schultz all earned invitations to Beaverton.

Pomona (Calif.) Diamond Ranch offensive lineman Kammy Delp won the OL MVP and also was invited to The Opening

On defense, Portland (Ore.) Jesuit linebacker Joey Alfieri won the LB MVP and was invited to The Opening, a stone's throw from his high school as were El Cerrito (Calif.) cornerback Adarius Pickett and Gardena (Calif.) Serra's Adoree Jackson, the West's top prospect.

Arlington (Texas) Mansfield Timberview safety Brandon Simmons isn't from the West, but he'll play his college ball in the region, committing to Stanford last month and he also snagged an invite to The Opening after the Oakland NFTC.

Also earning MVP honors at the NFTC were Corona (Calif.) running back Nick Gibson, Roseville (Calif.) Oakmont receiver Justin Holmes, Sandy (Utah) Jordan defensive lineman Mori Savini and Corona (Calif.) Centennial cornerback John Plattenburg.

Two more players from the West were added to the roster for The Opening during the week, both earning MVP honors at an NFTC this spring.  Corona (Calif.) Centennial cornerback John Plattenburg was named DB MVP at the Oakland NFTC last Sunday and he was selected to The Opening, the second Centennial player this year picked (Viane Talamaivao the other) and Imperial (Calif.) running back Royce Freeman, the RB MVP at the Los Angeles NFTC in March was also named to The Opening list.
