The Opening: Mama Update

The Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman, Damien Mama, shined in Beaverton and talked about his top schools...

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Damien Mama made his case for five-stars loud and clear at The Opening.

Mama moved to five-stars this week after a terrific showing in Beaverton and is now ranked as the top offensive guard in the 2014 class.

But for Mama, the only statement he wanted to make was against the defensive linemen.

"It was great, just being since December being in pads," said Mama. "It was pretty awesome, the crack of the helmets together was pretty cool. I can't wait for the season. It's a whole different experience in pads. The defensive linemen think when they put on pads, they can bull rush us like crazy. But they don't know that when we put on pads, we can do more stuff to them. So I said bring it on."

Mama was one of the top two linemen in attendance and left an impression on those in attendance. He also shined with two of his close friends, Corona (Calif.) Centennial guard Viane Talamaivao and Pomona (Calif.) Diamond Ranch guard Kammy Delp, who he often worked in reps with.

"All three of us would line up and then just set it up to go out there and dominate," said Mama. "All of us being Polynesian, we had to represent."

From a recruiting standpoint, Mama has around 30 offers, but a few schools are starting to emerge from the pack.

Mama said that Alabama, USC and UCLA continue to be a big presence in his recruitment, but that other national programs are making a push.

"Alabama, USC and UCLA are all on me real hard," said Mama. "I wouldn't say they're my top three, but they're all definitely high on my list."

The relationship with coaches at each of those schools has played a big role in their presence in his recruitment.

"I'm going to Alabama for the LSU game and I'm considering them because I'm pretty close with Coach (Mario) Cristobal. He came by the school and said he wanted to coach me. They're the national champions and everyone wants to be on a national championship team," said Mama. "USC, the whole staff is recruiting me but I talk the most with Coach (Ed) Orgeron, Coach (Tee) Martin, Coach (Mike) Summers, Coach (James) Cregg and Coach (Lane) Kiffin. At UCLA, I have a good relationship with Coach (Adrian) Klemm and I talk to Coach (Jim) Mora a lot."

Still, he's not ruling out other schools and several are still recruiting him hard.

"Ole Miss is a big one. Washington is too, and so is Ohio State, Notre Dame and both Florida and Florida State, Cal has been a big one too, " said Mama. "I'm trying to get out to Ole Miss this summer."

Mama plays tackle for St. John Bosco and while he likely projects to guard, he said he'll play whatever is asked of him.

"I don't have a preference, I'll play whatever the needs of the team are," said Mama. "If the coach has short depth at one position more than the other, I'll play whatever. They could move to center too."

Mama said he's likely to announce at the UnderArmour All-America Game.
