Milwaukee (Wisc.) Hamilton power forward Kevon Looney showed why he's such a coveted prospect Wednesday at the Adidas Super 64, flashing an impressive face up game from the perimeter to go along with excellent ball skills for a big. He went 3-for-3 on turnaround, step-back jumpers from the baseline.
Naturally, with his skillset, Looney is one of the most coveted 2014 prospects in the country, with offers from most of the elite high majors.
"Right now, I still have my top ten," Looney said. "It's Florida, Duke, Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Georgetown, UCLA, and Stanford."
Looney said that he plans on cutting his list to five by the end of July, but isn't quite sure who'll make the list at this point. With much of the list consolidated to the Midwest and East, the two outliers are Stanford and UCLA. He discussed why they've made the list so far.
"They're great schools," Looney said. "Stanford has a great program and great education. UCLA has a great tradition and program. Just a couple of years ago they went to all those Final Fours."
With UCLA, Looney was not recruited heavily by Ben Howland's old staff, so he says that Steve Alford's staff has had some ground to make up.
"They've been recruiting me pretty hard," Looney said of UCLA. "They came back in in July. It's hard for them to start new, but we've got a pretty good relationship."
After Looney cuts his list, he'll start to think about when and where to visit. The plan now is to take visits to each of the schools remaining on his list.
With his ball skills, Looney would prefer to play small forward at the next level, although schools are recruiting him as more of a combo forward.
"I work on my ball skills every day," Looney said. "My shooting, my dribbling. I think I can play both small forward and power forward, but I like small forward more.
"Schools say I'm very versatile and I can play both."
As for a final decision, Looney would like to get the process over with so he can enjoy his senior year.
"November (is when I'll sign)," Looney said. "I want to get my decision done before the high school season starts."
