Newton Breaks Down List of Six

JaQuan Newton, a four-star guard prospect, has narrowed his list of schools to six. He told Scout.com what he likes about each of them...

As is the protocol for most major recruits following the July evaluation periods, JaQuan Newton, a four-star recruit out of Philadelphia (Penn.) Neumann-Goretti, narrowed his list of schools on Wednesday.

The schools with a shot at landing the prized guard are Miami, Minnesota, Oregon, Syracuse, Texas A&M and UCLA.

"These are the schools recruiting me as a point guard," Newton said. "These are the schools that stood out the most to me from calling me and coming to all of my games. These are the schools I can go to and play at as a freshman."

When narrowing his list, Newton said he considered the position the school was recruiting him to play. Newton's preference is to play on the ball.

"That's definitely a big issue," Newton said. "At my size if you want to have the chance the go to the next level there's no way you can be a 6-3 shooting guard."

Newton broke down the six schools involved:

Miami: "I like their coach and their offense. They run and gun. They were second in pick and roll situations. I think that's my style of play. That's my game."

Minnesota: "I think Coach Pitino, being at his previous school, I watched him and they do a lot of run and gun. If I were to go there I could be like a Trey Burke with the ball in my hands and I could control the offense."

Oregon: "I like the fact that they are going to play me on and off the ball because they have Dominic Artis. They'll play me both. I like their style of offense."

Syracuse: "With Syracuse I go to Neumman-Goretti and there's a pipeline from Neumman with good guards that go there. I feel like if you go to Syracuse you have a chance to go to the NBA and I'd have a lot of good players I'd be playing with."

Texas A&M: "Their coach, coached my dad when he was in JUCO. I know what type of offense they are going to run. I also think if I were to go there I'd play right away and they'll put the ball in my hands."

UCLA: "I haven't really watched their games that much with the new coach. I talked to my high school coach and he's watched them play. He thinks it'd be a good situation for me and they really need a point guard. If I were to go there I'd play on and off the ball and I could play right away. I think if I went there I could get good quality minutes and help them and they'll put the ball in my hands."

The next step for Newton to set up college visits.

"I just want to take visits and then after I take visits I'm going to go from there," Newton said.

Which head coach does Newton have the best relationship with?

"Right now out of my list I think I have a great relationship with coach [Richard] Pitino and Minnesota," Newton said.

"He's texts me often," he added. "He just texts me a lot and we talk here and there. He calls me and we just text."

Newton is currently ranked No. 54 overall
