Mama Close to Trimming List

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Damien Mama, the #1 offensive line prospect in the west, has set up his first two official visits and is close to narrowing down his list...

Damien Mama has a current list of 13 schools but could be a week away from cutting it down to seven or eight.

"I'm real close," Mama said. "I've been thinking about it a lot and I have a good idea what schools will make the cut. I have an official visit to Alabama set up for (Nov. 8) when they play LSU and just set up Wisconsin for (Oct. 12). I'm looking at setting visits with a few more schools but just trying to work out the dates.

"I want to visit Ohio State when they play Michigan but that's in late October and I wanted to have most of my trips done before then. I'm looking at visiting Notre Dame with JuJu (Smith) and Tyler (Luatua) for the USC game and another possibility is Florida when they host Florida State since I like both schools a lot but that's late November too so I'll have to wait and see about those last three."

Mama has been linked with several players as a possible package deal. Early on, it was Viane Talamaivao and Alabama. There has also been talk of USC with Toa Lobendahn and recently, it was Mama and Joe Mixon.

"I'm real close with a lot of players," Mama said. "Every time I talk with Joe, he always tells me he needs me blocking for him. We decided to take that Wisconsin visit together but I don't know about any package deal. It would be fun to play with him because he's a great player but I'm going to pick the best school that fits me."

Mama recently visited BYU and Utah and said he enjoyed both schools quite a bit.

"I visited BYU first and that was a good visit," Mama said. "I like coach Anae a lot and I'm LDS so I'm real comfortable with the people there and just the environment. Utah was cool too, it was my first time talking with the OL coach, Dan Finn.

"Nick Alaimalo is a GA there and he's my cousin so it was cool to see him. BYU is in my top 13 right now and I'm going to give them a hard look. Utah is right outside of that but I'm developing a relationship with them more now and I'm still going to give them a look moving forward.

"I talk with Coach Klemm at UCLA and Tee Martin at USC a lot. I'm high on California and Washington too. I like a lot of schools and I couldn't even tell you who's recruiting me the hardest. To be honest, I really don't like talking to coaches that much. I like to keep to myself, I'm a private person so when they talk, I just listen. It's good though, I know it's important to build that relationship with them so that's what I'm doing right now."
