Updated 2014 Scout 300

Check out where the UCLA prospects now are in the post-summer, pre-fall updated 2014 rankings...

Scout 300

The camps are done, the 7on7 season is over and the pads and helmets are now on.

High school football season in America is back, with games kicking off around the country last weekend and this weekend.

After seeing thousands and thousands of prospects around the country for the past eight months, the post-summer, pre-season Scout 300 is out, and hanging on to the top spot continues to be Leonard Fournette, the five-star running back from New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine.

Cameron Robinson

West Monroe (La.) offensive tackle Cameron Robinson remains at No.2, while Norcross (Ga.) defensive end Lorenzo Carter comes in at three.

Then comes a run on cornerbacks from fourth through sixth, Beaumont (Texas) Ozen's Tony Brown, Paramus (N.J.) Catholic's Jabrill Peppers and Gardena (Calif.) Serra's Adoree Jackson.

A pair of safeties are seventh and eighth, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly's Juju Smith and Lewisville (Texas) Hebron's Jamal Adams respectively.

Rounding out the top ten are Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain quarterback Kyle Allen and Woodbridge (Va.) defensive end Da'Shawn Hand.

There was plenty of movement though, especially in the South.

Chad Thomas started off in the Scout 100 and he has worked his way up to the top 20 in the country after a very impressive summer. Thomas, a star out of Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington has gained about 15-20 pounds this off-season,

"Thomas has showed he can beat the best in the country, and he still has so much upside," said national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons. "He is now in the discussion for the overall top prospect in Florida and that says a lot. With his quickness off the ball, the added mass and strength helping him seal the edge combined with his upside puts him in an elite group on Scout."

But Simmons said Thomas is not the only prospect to make the move up to five stars.

Ermon Lane

"Another Florida prospect moving into that elite group is wide receiver Ermon Lane out of Homestead," said Simmons. "He has as much potential as any wideout in America. He really shined at The Opening against some of the top corners in the country and he ran past them, went up over them, and out-muscled them for the ball. He has really started to take off and show why we have had him ranked high from the get-go. Lane and Thomas are two of the big names making a big move this cycle."

In fact, Florida was home to several big movers.

"Bradenton (Fla.) Manatee star defensive tackle DeMarcus Christian had a super off-season and spring," said national recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg.  "He lost weight but added strength and bulk. Christmas was quicker and much more active than at any point last season. In their spring game against Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln he was a one man wrecking crew. He was unblockable and dominating. You can make a strong case that he's currently the top ranked defensive tackle in Florida right now. But we still have Khairi Clark (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) rated ahead of Christmas. How they play over the coming weeks will determine who gets that coveted top spot at this position."

Newberg highlighted a few other movers.

"Other guys from Florida that made a big push and got a bump to four-star status are two outstanding wide receiver prospects in Travis Rudolph (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) and Johnnie Dixon (West Palm Beach, Fla./Dwyer)."

In the East, receiver is a deep position with 11 of the Top 40 players in the region projecting as college receivers.

"The two that made the biggest jump over the summer are Brooklyn (N.Y) Erasmus Hall's Curtis Samuel and Sparta (N.J.) Pope John XXIII's Noah Brown," said regional manager Brian Dohn. "Both added a fourth star and are now in the Top 25 in the receiver."

As Brown matured this summer, his ranking grew.

"Brown's start was added after he bulked up to 210 pounds and also got quicker and showed very good hands and route-running skills at a Nike camp and also during a training camp practice. The uncommitted Brown has the burst to get past the defensive backs and he attacks the ball," said Dohn.

Curtis Samuel

Samuel's offseason paid huge dividends.

"Samuel had a huge spring and summer after a breakout junior season in which he usually lined up in the slot and was used in the jet sweep play. Samuel can also play safety in college, but he is committed to Ohio State as a receiver who can play a Percy Harvin-type role. Samuel is solid going into and out of breaks, his change of direction and ability to accelerate are phenomenal and he is a burner. He ran a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash at The Opening and held his own as a receiver," said Dohn.

There wasn't much movement in the Midwest after the summer.

"The Midwest's prospects in the Scout 300 remained largely unchanged at the top," said national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu. "Indiana had two prospects slide into the list though. Terry McLaurin and Drue Tranquill were already four-star prospects, but both are now in the 300. McLaurin is a speedy wide receiver committed to Ohio State and Tranquill is an athletic safety who will play linebacker in college. He is committed to Purdue."

In the Midlands there were not a lot of major changes to the Scout300 at the top of the rankings, as the Top 10 in the Midlands all stayed exactly the same.

But Houston (Texas) Lamar defensive back John Bonney, made a move of his own.

John Bonney

"Bonney is a versatile player who could end up at safety or corner, and he is one prospect who shot up the charts and in to the Scout.com Top 100 with a dominating performance at The Opening and the Texas State 7v7" said national recruiting analyst Greg Powers.

And a Texas receiver also added a fourth star.

"Texas A&M wide receiver commit Jamal Jeffery added a fourth star after showing that he has an elite package of skills. The Lufkin (Texas) High star is not the most physically imposing, but he has an electricity and playmaking quality that you do not see quite often," said Powers.

The defense is where the biggest moves were made out West.

A pair of Stanford linebacker commitments made the biggest jump in the newly released 2014 Scout 300.

"Portland (Ore.) Jesuit's Joey Alfieri and Santa Ana (Calif.) Foothill's Bobby Okereke both had impressive spring and summers and are definitely worthy of being upgraded to four-star status," said national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins.  "Alfieri was already well known regionally but blew up nationally at the NIKE Camp in Oakland in May. He not only earned LB MVP honors and an invite to The Opening but was singled out by lead NIKE LB coach Chris Gizzi as having the best linebacker performance at any of the 12 camps all tour. Alfieri is currently rated the No. 3 OLB in the West but may have more upside than any 'backer in the region. At 6-2, 230 pounds, he's not only bigger, but more athletic than the players rated ahead of him. If he has the kind of senior season we expect him to have and dominates on the field with the pads on the way he did this past summer, don't be surprised if Alfieri jumps to the top of the linebacker list."

Joey Alfieri

Okereke also shot up the charts.

"Okereke is a late bloomer who has incredible upside to him," said Biggins.  "He has a great frame, is quick and athletic and plays with an edge. He has a non-stop motor and covers a ton of ground. He has the ability to play just about any of the linebacker positions in college and will be able to be moved all over the field to take advantage of his high level play making skills."

After finally getting to see San Mateo (Calif.) Serra defensive Matt Dickerson in person, the Notre Dame commit also cracked the Scout 300.

"Dickerson also made a huge jump and is now a four-star and the No. 2 player in the west at his position. At 6-5, 275 pounds, he has a huge frame and looks like a college player right now. He's flexible enough to move around and play multiple positions on the line and shows a great upfield burst. He can finish a play and has high level closing speed and does a great job using his hands to get blockers off his body."

The post-summer/pre-fall regional and state rankings for the 2014 class will be released throughout the week.
