Malachi Dupre is the nation's top wide receiver. This is a five-star recruit from Louisiana power River Ridge John Curtis. He's a wanted man that could name his school. Dupre is not quite at a point to completely narrow down his list of suitors but he does have a set of schools that he's comfortable saying are his favorites.
"I would say that I am not ready to get down to a handful of schools," Dupre said. "But there are some that I would say are my favorites. LSU, Florida State, Alabama and UCLA are on top right now."
Dupre, 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, is hoping to get out and see some programs this fall. He will have to rely on unofficial visits, as John Curtis has a policy that players can't make official visits during the season. Even those unofficial visits could prove hard to make.
"It's going to be tough because of our schedule," Dupre said. "But I will try and see the schools that are close. I will get to LSU and I will try and get to Alabama and Florida State. I will make my official visits after the season is over and make my commitment on signing day."
Dupre doesn't seem to mind the wait. After all, he's focused on winning a state championship. It's a rugged schedule for John Curtis. On Friday they beat one of the top teams from the Northeast in Oradell, N.J. power Bergen Catholic 24-13. Next weekend they play Florida power Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.
"We are always motivated but when you start off a season like what we have it motivates you even more," Dupre said. "We work hard in the off-season. We have the coaches that really push us. They prepare us. We are prepared for games like tonight (Bergen Catholic). Now we have to get ready for St. Thomas Aquinas. But that's why we put in the work."
Dupre is all business. He knows what the hard work means. He is not satisfied with where he's at as a player. Dupre knows he has much to work on to improve his game, even though he's the top dog when it comes to wide receivers.
"There's so many areas I have worked on this off-season," Dupre said. "I am confident in what I do. I know I had a good year last season. But I have to get better. The main thing I focused on this off-season was the mental part of the game. I know when it comes to football that's just as important as the physical part. I have to be a mentally better player. I have to be prepared and have that focus every day. I have to do all those little things. I have to work on my route running and reading defenses. I have to get better physically. I can say that I am a much better player today than I was last year."
Against Bergen Catholic, Dupre caught five passes. He also had a key block early in the game to spring a 72-yard touchdown run. On the Patriots second possession he had the catch of the night. Dupre beat his defender on a vertical route. The ball was thrown behind him. Dupre made a super mid-air adjust, turned his body towards the sideline, making the grab. That single play showed why he's so thought of.
"I did everything I could do to help my team win tonight," Dupre said. "I made some plays to help us win. That's all I want to do and we won the game."
