UCLA Prospect Recap: Week One

A look at how UCLA's commits and recruits did in opening week action, including more big games by UCLA targets...

Game of the Week:  Corona (Calif.) Centennial def. Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure, 69-55
Centennial running back Tre Watson, another Cal commit that UCLA is recruiting, had a huge night, rushing for 466 yards and seven touchdowns in a win over the Seraphs.  UCLA commit Barry Ware had five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown.  St. Bonaventure quarterback Ricky Town was 24-for-34 for 259 yards and four touchdowns. Lavan Alston had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and caught a TD pass.

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco def. Clovis North, 48-0
With UCLA offensive line coach Adrian Klemm and secondary coach Demetrice Martin on hand to watch several of their targets, St. John Bosco quarterback Josh Rosen was 16-for-23 passes for 221 yards, a touchdown and an interception.  Bosco safety Jaleel Wadood, a commit to Cal who UCLA is still recruiting had six catches for 95 yards in the blowout.  Clovis North, which has UCLA target Jacob Daniel, a Scout 300 member for 2015, saw Daniel get double teamed much of the night. 

Newhall Hart def. West Hills Chaminade, 55-54 (OT)
Two of the Southland's best quarterbacks, Miami-bound Brad Kaaya and 2015 four-star Brady White, put on a show in an overtime thriller.  White was 36-for-53 passes for 490 yards and a school record-tying seven touchdowns passes.  Kaaya was 16-for-37 for 370 yards and three touchdowns and Donovan Lee ran for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass. Trent Irwin, a 2015 four-star receiver, had nine catches for 179 yards and three touchdowns.  

Bellevue def. Skyline, 45-7
UCLA target Budda Baker had two first-half touchdowns, a seven-yard score and a 47-yard touchdown, with former Bellevue star and current UCLA freshman Myles Jack on the sidelines to support his alma mater.  Baker also forced a fumble and played sparingly in the second half, after helping the Wolverines win their 41st-straight game.

Gardena Serra def. Oceanside, 50-39
Trailing 39-36 in the fourth quarter, Serra used a 54-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Greene to UCLA commit Jordan Lasley to take the lead and UCLA target Adoree Jackson added another late touchdown to help the Cavs stay unbeaten in a intersectional matchup with Oceanside.  Lasley also had a 28-yard touchdown catch from Greene earlier in the game.

Mission Viejo def. Corona Santiago, 58-35
The Sharks had an 11-point lead early, but Mission Viejo stormed back to win handily. UCLA 2015 quarterback recruit Blake Barnett rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns and added a touchdown pass to his 139 yards passing.

San Jose Bellarmine Prep def. El Cerrito, 28-25.
UCLA assistant coach Demetrice Martin was in attendance in a matchup of two of NorCal's top teams, watching UCLA commit Adarius Pickett as well as linebacker D.J. Calhoun, who had a fumble recovery for a touchdown, but El Cerrito fell to four-star quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels, a Vanderbilt commit who had three touchdown runs.

Bakersfield Liberty def. Fresno Central, 43-41
UCLA target Michiah Quick had a big night, catching nine passes for 180 yards and added an 80-yard touchdown but the Grizzlies fell in triple overtime.

Greenwood (Ind.) Center Grove def. Carmel (Ind.), 35-26
UCLA verbal Austin Roberts had another big game in a loss to Center Grove, catching 11 passes for 168-yards, including an 80-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown.

Chandler (Ariz.) def. Sierra Vista (Ariz.) Buena, 65-13
UCLA 2015 quarterback recruit Bryce Perkins was 11-for-13 for 130 yards and three touchdowns and added 41 yards on three carries. Two of his touchdown passes went to UCLA recruit Dionte Sykes, in his first game back from a wrist injury.

Auburn (Ala.) def. Montgomery (Ala.) Jefferson Davis, 45-18
Auburn, behind UCLA commit Antreal Allen and their chief linebacker target, Rashaan Evans, routed Davis by four touchdowns

Other UCLA Targets and Commits in Action
Compton Centennial, with UCLA commit Denzel Fisher, beat crosstown foe Compton, 48-0.  Anaheim Servite def. Long Beach Poly and Juju Smith and Iman Marshall, 30-24.  Elk Grove (Calif.) Cosumnes Oaks receiver Alex Van Dyke had a 52-yard touchdown pass to help beat Sacramento (Calif.), 24-13.  Pomona (Calif.) Diamond Ranch offensive lineman Kammy Delp topped Pico Rivera (Calif.) El Rancho, 42-14.  Lompoc (Calif.) defensive tackle Ainuu Taua fell to Bakersfield (Calif.) Frontier, 28-16.
