Sykes Talks About UCLA

Chandler (Ariz.) wide receiver Dionte Sykes came out to Los Angeles with his high school team this weekend to take on St. John Bosco Saturday night. The Wolves lost to Bosco, but Sykes said after the game that it was nice to get back to Los Angeles.

"This is where my family is from," Sykes said. "I love being out in L.A."

Sykes lists himself as committed to UCLA, after he made a public, Twitter commitment to the Bruins earlier this year. He cites his relationship with Coach Eric Yarber and Noel Mazzone as the main reasons for his commitment.

"I've known Coach Yarber since I was a baby," Sykes said. "And then with coach Mazzone, I've known him for years. It was just such a comfortable fit for me."

There have been mixed reports, however, as to whether Sykes actually had a committable offer at the time of his public commitment, with the offer potentially contingent on his grades checking out.

According to Sykes, that shouldn't be a problem.

"You know, I had a really rough start to high school," Sykes said. "I wasn't taking my academics seriously enough. The last two years, I've really come on, and my test scores are good. I'm not going to let anything like that get in the way of my dream of playing at UCLA."

Sykes is firm in his commitment to UCLA, saying that he has no plans to take other visits or pursue other offers. He said there's only one other school that's still recruiting him.

"Michigan State still calls me from time to time," Sykes said. "I'll take the calls and listen to them, but I'm committed to UCLA."

Sykes said that he's still working out plans with Noel Mazzone for an official visit in October, but he's not sure which date it will be.
