Monday Practice Notes

A few comments from Head Coach Bob Toledo on the state of the team, and a few from quarterback prospect, Ben Olson, who visited practice...

Head Coach Bob Toledo on…

When he foresees naming the starters at the positions that are still uncertain:

"Once we put the pads on, I'd say after our last Wednesday practice at the Rose Bowl, a week from this Wednesday. And then Thursday we start game-planning for Alabama. There's no reason to make a decision until then."

On what positions are those that need to have a starter named…

"Corner, strong safety…we have a bunch of defensive linemen and we have to start somebody. They're all going to play because that will give us a chance to rotate guys who are fresh. And then the offensive line, the right guard position is up. Shane Lehmann's been sick. Today was his first day back. Blake Worley got a concussion yesterday and that's not his first one. So, we're going to give him a Cat scan. That bothers us.

He had some last year, he had one last spring. But there are a lot of positions up for grabs so we'll wait and see, but we have a little more quality depth than we've had."

On Steve Vieira getting time at left guard…

"We moved him from right tackle to right guard since we had both of those guards out. So he got work at right guard and he did some nice things, too. We'll look at him at guard and tackle. Mociler is playing left guard. We don't want to move him. He has to change his stance and it's confusing."

On the possibility of a freshman offensive lineman playing…

"It's really hard. If there was a real need, we could play with somebody. We played with Bryce Bohlander when he was a freshman two years ago. It's just too hard. You have to be real special to play on the offensive line as a freshman. And we don't need it right now."

On Ryan McCann's progress…

"McCann is still a little tentative. It's like hurting your knee, you have to get hit and realize it's okay, then you kind of set it loose. He hasn't got to that point yet."

On recruiting quarterbacks…

"We're on some good quarterbacks, without mentioning any names. We'd like to get two quarterbacks this year if we can. We're after some high-profile guys. There's a great opportunity for a freshman coming in to play early in his career."

On the defense chomping at the bit to hit…

"I tell you what – it's good. I have to try to tone it down a little bit, but I don't want to take the fight out of them either. But it's good. They have some spirit. I think, with the defense, Coach Snow and Coach Littlejohn have added to the spirit of our defense, and I hope it all remains this way."

On the freshman defensive backs…

"You look at Ware, Raymo, Clark and Cassell, those four guys we'll continue to look at real hard."

On establishing the receivers who will be in the rotation…

"I think it looks really good. Bragg looks really good. Ryan Smith looks good. There are four guys out there I feel really good about, with Poli-Dixon, Perry, Bragg and Smith. And we're trying to find a fifth guy. Cody Joyce could be one. He had a little bit of a knee problem today, we held him out. Jerry Owens has a chance and Devon Reese."

Comments from Ben Olson about his day at UCLA:

"I arrived at 8:15 this morning. I sat in on a quarterback meeting with Coach Pearce. It's interesting. The offense is so different from high school, so much more to know."

"It's been great to be here, and very interesting. It was my first college practice so it's good to be out on the field. You see the teams in games, but you don't see the practices."

"The team is a bunch of great guys. I've been having a very fun time. I know a lot of guys on the team, so it's pretty comfortable. I'm friends with Ryan Smith. I saw him at the spring game but we keep in touch."

"I'm going to USC tomorrow [Tuesday]. I want to see what USC is like. I've been to a couple of USC games, but that's it. I know Carson Palmer, but I don't know very many other guys at USC."
