Blake Barnett is part of a talented group of local quarterbacks in the 2015 class and has a nice upside to him. at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds, he has a very nice frame and plenty of room to fill out. He's a very good athlete, runs around well and has plenty of arm strength.
He didn't play much as a sophomore so he still needs plenty of time to develop. His overall pocket presence and feel will improve with game reps and if he can continue to fine tune some mechanical issues and tighten up his release, he has a chance to be a very good quarterback.
"He has a very high ceiling," Santiago coach Jeff Steinberg said. "Unlike some of the other quarterbacks in his class, he didn't play much as a sophomore because we had a real solid senior starter last year. So Blake is just learning the position but has a world of potential.
"He's very athletic, he can run a little and is very tough. He has taken some shots this year but always gets right back up. He's starting to make all the throws and we've cleaned up some things on his deeper balls and intermediate throws.
"He has a strong arm, he can get the ball down the field and is already able to go through his progressions and find his third or fourth option when most H.S quarterbacks are lucky to get to their second read. He's very humble and his intangibles are off the chart. He has so much to work on and realizes that but is such a hard worker so I'm excited to see him develop."
Barnett said he got a text message from his quarterback coach this morning and was told to give UCLA a call.
"I called Noel Mazzone and he told me all the coaches watched my film including coach Mora and everyone was impressed," Barnett said. "Then he told me Taylor (Mazzone) wanted to talk to me too and he got on the phone and told me they wanted to offer me a scholarship.
"I couldn't believe it, it was a very humbling experience getting my first offer from such a great school like UCLA. I've been to a couple of games this season already and growing up in Southern, California, UCLA is definitely a big time school and I'm very excited about it."
Barnett is in no hurry to make his decision and has a couple of big unofficial visits coming up.
"We have a bye this weekend so I'm going to visit Tennessee," Barnett said. "Then I'm going to visit Notre Dame for the USC game later this month. I've never really been outside of Southern, CA so I'm looking forward to seeing something new and seeing what the rest of the country looks like.
"I'm not in any hurry to make my decision right now. I'm looking for a school with a good football program obviously but academics, location and the coaching staff are big to me too. That's why these trips will be important for me, so I can see if I'll be just as comfortable away from home as I would be closer to home."
