Depth Chart for California

Since UCLA no longer releases a weekly depth chart during the season, we thought we'd take a stab at the depth of the base offense and defense....

Since UCLA no longer releases a depth chart every week, we thought we'd piece together a depth chart from what we've seen from games this year, and what we saw throughout fall camp. We'll adjust as needed on Mondays as the season progresses based off injuries sustained in games and what changes are made in games.

With how many different formations UCLA uses on both offense and defense, it's a bit limiting to do a depth chart of just the base defense. Given the quantity of different formations, though, we'd spend the next several weeks going through all the different variations of which players can play where in which personnel packages.

That said, there are some limits to a depth chart of just the base defense, so, before getting into the meat of it, here are a few notes:

*We've put Conor McDermott in as the backup at left tackle, but we don't actually think he'd be the starter if Simon Goines went down for a considerable amount of time. If Goines got hurt, we'd anticipate that Xavier Su'a-Filo would shift to left tackle, setting off a chain reaction that would have either Ben Wysocki or Caleb Benenoch shifting to left guard and, likely, another redshirt being burned among the freshmen (either Kenny Lacy or Poasi Moala).

*On the flip side, if Caleb Benenoch were hurt, we could see Goines moving back to the right side, Su'a-Filo moving to left tackle, and Ben Wysocki filling it at left guard.

*The defensive line is interesting. We've put Deon Hollins in as one among the left defensive ends because he has played almost entirely with his hand down in nickel situations. In the interest of accurately describing where he plays, we fudged a little on the actual position.

*Also at left end is a group that includes Keenan Graham, Ellis McCarthy, and Eddie Vanderdoes. So far, it looks as if McCarthy starts, with Graham and Vanderdoes backing up to different extents depending on the formation. Vanderdoes and McCarthy also both play a little nose, but we wanted to put players where they play the most.

*We've started Myles Jack at left outside linebacker, and haven't included him elsewhere in the defense, but, just to be clear, he shifts inside in nickel and is probably the backup at at least one of the inside slots in the base defense. If he got hurt, it would drastically curtail what UCLA is able to do defensively, since it doesn't have another linebacker who can cover like him. As we pointed out in the stats article earlier today, Jack is 2nd in the Pac-12 in pass breakups. As a linebacker. Who drops into coverage maybe half the game. That's...pretty good.

*Brandon Sermons actually looks as if he's the second string corner at both cornerback spots right now, but we'd anticipate Priest Willis getting more time as the season progresses.
