Mama Taking Visits

The Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco five-star offensive lineman, Damien Mama, is starting to take his trips...

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Damien Mama had seen teammates take official visits but until this past weekend, the five-star only got to hear about them.

After St. John Bosco routed Santa Margarita on national television, Mama had to hop on a plane to Wisconsin, where he took his much awaited first official visit.

"Man, it was great," said Mama. "It was a great atmosphere. Wisconsin has a great fan base and great coaches. It was a great overall trip. It was my first visit and it was really cool. I didn't have to worry about my travel, everything was taken care of."

Mama said that he had several hosts on the visit.

"I didn't have like one host, pretty much the whole offensive line was my host," said Mama.

Mama also got to spend a lot of time with the Badger coaches.

"I talked a lot with Coach (Chad) Kauha'aha'a, who's recruiting me and then sat down and talked with Coach (T.J.) Woods, the offensive line coach. We talked about the scheme and the offense and how I'd fit in," said Mama. "Coach Woods said that their offensive linemen a couple years ago, all were in the NFL and even a player who didn't start got drafted. They have a good tradition of linemen there."

Then came some one-on-one time with head coach Gary Andersen.

"Coach Andersen is a player's coach and that is the biggest thing," said Mama. "He emphasizes the players first. He had a quote that players make plays and players win games. That's how he is. He really cares about his players."

Mama said he enjoyed being in Madison.

"Madison was great," said Mama. "You could walk down the street, and people say hi to you. They're really friendly. It's a small town but it feels big. And there were some good eats. That was the highlight of the trip."

Overall, Mama had high marks for the visit.

"It was a 10 overall," said Mama. "Camp Randall was insane and the fan base was crazy. They had them doing ‘Jump Around' and everyone was all singing together. It was all good."

The turnaround is quick for Mama, who will head to South Bend this weekend to visit Notre Dame when they host USC. He'll then head to Alabama next month when the Tide hosts LSU.

"I'm not sure yet where my other two visits will be," said Mama. "I still may visit USC and UCLA officially, but I can go there anytime."

Mama has been to games at both the Rose Bowl and the Coliseum, and both staffs are making a big push for him.

"Coach O (Ed Orgeron) is probably the coach I'm the closest with on the USC staff but I also talk with Coach (James) Cregg and Coach (Mike) Summers," said Mama. "And I've been to a couple of UCLA games and that whole coaching staff is really cool. Coach (Adrian) Klemm and Coach (Jim) Mora are real players coaches. And I really look up to Xavier Su'a-Filo."

The top-ranked offensive guard prospect nationally, Mama played both tackle and guard last Friday in their win over Santa Margarita. And most schools still like him as a guard, except one.

"Coach (Nick) Saban said he wants me as an offensive tackle but everyone else wants me as a guard," said Mama.

St. John Bosco will play Orange Lutheran this Friday.
