Prospect Preview: Week Eight

A look at the week six matchups featuring UCLA commits and targets...

Game of the Week:  Fresno Central vs. Tulare Union
The top two teams in the Tri-River League meet and both put their unbeaten league records on the line.  Both sides have a UCLA prospect too.  UCLA has their sights set on five-star receiver Michiah Quick, who's been terrific this season. Central defensive tackle Tashon Smallwood has decommitted from USC, where he'd been committed since February, and UCLA is still recruiting him, and he's openly expressed that the Bruins are in his top five though Arizona State and Cal appear to be in a better spot right now.  Clovis North features 2015 Scout 100 prospect Jacob Daniel, the top defensive tackle in California who also has an offer from the Bruins.

St. John Bosco vs. JSerra
St. John Bosco is paced by 2015 quarterback Josh Rosen, the No. 2 quarterback in the 2015 class nationally and a five-star by He leads a Braves offense that is bolstered up front by Damien Mama, Scout's No. 1 offensive guard prospect in the 2014 class. USC commit Shay Fields is his top target. Defensively, there are few teams as talented as the Braves, their line led by USC commit Malik Dorton and three-star Jacob Tuioti-Mariner at the defensive ends. Washington State commit Chandler Leniu, the heart and soul of the Braves defense, is their middle linebacker. And the secondary is loaded, with Cal commit and four-star Jaleel Wadood anchoring it at safety. Four-star cornerback Naijiel Hale, who's committed to Arizona, plays opposite three-star corner Chandler Hawkins, a verbal to Air Force.  Serra is led by two-way athlete Dante Pettis, one of the top sleeper prospects in the region. Pettis is a dynamic player on both sides of the ball capable of impacting the game at receiver and safety. He currently has offers from Nevada, San Diego State and Villanova but his talent level is high and he can play for just about anyone out West. Junior quarterback Nick Robinson is an intriguing player with some upside. At 6-foot-1, 195-pounds, he has a nice, athletic frame, quick release and a live arm.

El Cerrito vs. Pinole Valley
El Cerrito is led by UCLA commit Adarius Pickett, who's shining at both running back and cornerback for El Cerrito and he is joined by teammate D.J. Calhoun, who recently decommitted from USC and plans to visit UCLA officially.

Carmel (Ind.) vs. Indianapolis (Ind.) Pike
Headlining Carmel is wide receiver Austin Roberts, who committed to UCLA this fall. Also playing for Carmel is junior Isaac James, who splits time at wide receiver and quarterback. James holds an offer from Indiana. Hamilton Southeastern features one of the best wide receivers in the state, Louisville commit Cameron Polk. More offensive fire power comes from junior wide out Chris Ford and senior tight end Kyle Schrank. Both are looking for their first BCS offers.

Elk Grove Cosumnes Oaks vs. Folsom Vista Del Lago
Four-star 2014 receiver Alex Van Dyke who recently committed to UCLA, and 2015 four-star receiver L.J. Reed are one of the best 1-2 punches at receiver in the West.  They take on Vista Del Lago, which has rising 2015 quarterback Matt Jimison.

Gardena Serra vs. Los Angeles Cathedral
Serra continues Mission League play with all the players, eight with UCLA offers, including committed receiver Jordan Lasley, as well as five-star cornerback Adoree Jackson, four-star linebacker Dwight Williams, three-star safety Glenn Ihenacho, 2015 five-star linebacker John Houston, 2015 four-star defensive lineman Rasheem Green and 2015 four-star running back Malik Roberson (who is out for the year with an ACL injury) as well 2016 safety Brandon Burton.  Cathedral has 2015 quarterback M.C. Poe leading the way.

Chaminade vs. Santa Fe Springs St. Paul
Chaminade has a balanced attack led by Miami commitment Brad Kaaya at quarterback who was recently offered by UCLA and USC and running back Donovan Lee who has offers from Colorado and Colorado State among others as well as his 2016 brother, Dymond Lee, who has an offer from Miami.. Defensively, Chaminade is led by UCLA commit Jojo McIntosh.

Auburn (Ala.) vs. Phenix City Central
This annual rivalry was a one possession game a season ago and it's tough to imagine it going any differently this time around. Both defenses are the strength of each team, and both will rely on a two way four-star. For Auburn, Rashaan Evans will play running back and edge rusher for the Tigers. The four-star outside linebacker projection has offers from all over the country, but has been focusing on Auburn, Alabama, UCLA and Georgia of late. Opposite him on the field at all times will be Stephen Roberts, the four-star Alabama commitment that will play cornerback in college and at times on Friday, though he is one week into his new, more permanent gig as the team's dual-threat quarterback. Auburn's defense also boasts UCLA defensive back commitment Antreal Allen, a three-star, Southern Miss commitment and three-star Darian Yancey at middle linebacker and dynamic wide receiver/cornerback talent Blaise Taylor, who turn heads with quickness and speed despite a 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame. Opelika will still be without top offensive weapon and Auburn tight end commitment Jakell Mitchell (torn ACL), but South Alabama DB pledge Malcolm Buggs will patrol the back-end of the defense alongside Roberts while junior three-star standouts Jared Gentry and Quandeski Whitlow look make plays in the trenches.

Compton Centennial vs. Torrance
UCLA commit Denzel Fisher, who also got a recent offer from USC, faces Torrance in a league game.

Chandler (Ariz.) vs. Gilbert (Ariz.)
Chandler is keyed by UCLA commit Dionte Sykes and 2015 quarterback recruit Bryce Perkins and they take on crosstown foe Basha.

Corona Centennial vs. Corona Roosevelt
Centennial continues Big VIII play with a matchup against Roosevelt.  Centennial has one of the most talented rosters in the West, with UCLA commit Barry Ware at receiver, Bruin target Viane Talamaivao on the offensive line, Cal commit but UCLA recruit Tre Watson at running back and plenty of other elite prospects.  Roosevelt is led by Marcus Williams, who was offered by Boise State recently.

Oakley Freedom vs. Pittsburg
Freedom is led by five-star running back Joe Mixon, UCLA's top target at running back and he'll go against a Pittsburg team that has a new Pac-12 commit in the backfield of their own, running back Harris Ross, who committed to Oregon State last week.

Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany at La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat
This game will feature some of the top underclassmen in the state. Alemany is led by 2015 Scout 100 receiver Desean Holmes. Holmes is already one of the top pass catchers in the region and has double digit scholarship offers from programs like USC, UCLA and Oklahoma. Junior running back Okalani Taufahema-Langi is one of the state's top power backs and the Crespi transfer has made an immediate impact for the Warriors. Junior standout Dominic Davis can play corner, safety, running back and receiver and will be a major BCS level prospect in two years. California DB commit Quentin Tartabull is the top defensive player for the Warriors but an MCL injury may leave him on the sideline. When healthy, Tartabull is a tackling machine who will play primarily as a linebacker. The Lancers have several talented sophomores to watch led by two-way athletes Trevon Sidney and Tyler Vaughns. Sidney is an explosive receiver and already has five picks at corner. He projects as a national recruit in two years. Vaughns has good size at 6-2 and is a very tough matchup for opposing corners. He'll play some safety too but projects very well at receiver. Junior Anthony Camargo is another two-way standout and will impact at running back and linebacker with the defense likely where he'll end up at the next level. Junior linebacker Christian Wiley is another talented underclassmen with all the physical tools to play on the next level.

Other UCLA Targets In Action
Lompoc with Ainuu Taua take on Santa Ynez.  Diamond Ranch and Kammy Delp play Rowland.
