The 6-5, 275-pounder has five offers, four from the Pac-12 and a slew of other schools are showing early interest in him.
"I have five offers, from Arizona State, UCLA, Utah, Utah State and Washington," said James. "Boise State and Cal are showing a lot of interest and I have a lot of interest in Michigan and Texas A&M."
Utah was the first school to offer James, and he's got family ties to the school.
"My grandpa played for the Utes so I‘ve always grown up watching them," said James. "Coach Kalani Sitake and Coach Dan Finn are the one's recruiting me and Coach Finn was who offered me. They gave me a little heads up and said expect an offer, but once it happened, recruiting really started to pick up."
James spent a year living in Oregon and the Ducks have also been a school he's been interested in.
This spring, James plans to visit a few of the out-of-state schools he's interested in.
"I'm definitely going to visit UCLA, Arizona State and Washington," said James. "Coach (Chris) Thomsen is recruiting me at Arizona State, Coach (Taylor) Mazzone is recruiting me at UCLA and Coach (Marques) Tuiasosopo is recruiting me at Washington."
James said each school likes him as a tackle, and he said he can play either side, with no real preference.
"I could play either spot, since I play both in our offense," said James. "I feel I'm versatile either way."
For now, James said he's open to leaving the state but could just as well stay close to home. It's early enough where there hasn't been a lean one way or the other."
"I don't know right now actually," said James. "Getting out of state isn't a big deal for me."
James said he wants to add some more weight before he ends up in college.
"I'm 275 right now, but we'll see what happens with my lifting," said James. "I want to put on a lot of muscle."
Academically, James has a 3.3 and will take the SAT for the first time in March.
With 15 months until he'll make a decision, James doesn't see any early decision on the horizon.
"I want to take my unofficials and some officials and I'll wait until my senior year to decide," said James. "I'm looking for a great coaching staff, player relationships with the coaching staff, a home away from home and somewhere where I really feel at home."
Herriman is in the quarterfinals of the Utah state playoffs.
