SAN ANTONIO — Four-star LB Kenny Young (New Orleans/John Curtis) didn't start focusing on his recruitment until after his team won the state championship three days before the start of the dead period.
For that reason, Young is still in the process of finalizing his official visit plans. He's considered taking visits to Texas A&M and Miami on the same weekend (Jan. 17-20), but he said he still might change that.
He did say for sure that he wants to take official visits to UCLA, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, but the timing is still up in the air. Young said he's not worried much about that yet.
"I've just been kicking back and relaxing," Young said. "I'm just taking my time with it and praying on it. I've been talking with my dad about this whole situation, and that's about it."
He said these upcoming official visits won't be the most important factor he considers when he eventually makes a decision, but they will help him narrow things down.
"It won't change the thought process, but it will let me know how I feel there, whether I feel comfortable or not. I'll get a feel for the environment and whether it's a place I can accomplish my goals. It's small things like that that'll determine where I go."
LSU remains in the mix as well, though Young said he may not take an official visit to Baton Rouge since he's been there so many times already. That doesn't mean the Tigers are out of it though, and Young said he wants to focus his officials on places he hasn't been.
Though there were once questions about where things stood between Young and LSU, those have all been erased.
"Everything's going real good with LSU," Young said. "The pressure's crazy, so that's part of it. But they really do want me, and if they can get me, they'd be all set at LB for the 2014 recruiting class. But I'm just taking my time and thinking about it."
As for his other favorites, Young provided some insight into what he likes about each one:
Texas A&M: "They need some linebackers that can play. They're recruiting me pretty hard ever since they offered me. Coach [Marcel] Yates is leaving but that doesn't change anything. I still think the same of them. I just want to get down to College Station and see what it's all about."
UCLA: "Their oldest group was at LB, and some of the young guys did get an opportunity to play. With Anthony Barr and Jordan Zumwalt leaving, the opportunity to play early there is good for me because that's one of the things I'm looking for."
Oklahoma State: "The linebacker that played my position is a senior so he's about to be gone. The guy behind him got hurt, and they've been recruiting me pretty hard since they offered me. I went up there in the summer and I loved the unofficial."
Miami: "My cousin went to Miami, so Coach [Michael] Barrow is always telling me about him. He's been recruiting me pretty hard. I really want to get down there and see what it's all about."
