Miami Hurricans offensive lineman Malcolm Bunche is transferring--and UCLA could be a possible destination.
This is particularly intriguing for UCLA because Bunche, as a fifth year graduating senior, would have immediate eligibility at whatever FBS program he chose to attend.
We've learned that Bunche is, in fact, visiting UCLA this weekend.
Bunche is a former four-star prospect who was projected to be a key cog for the Hurricanes in 2014. According to his father, he actually earned a mid-round grade for the 2014 NFL Draft, but wants to put in another year of school to potentially raise that grade.
According to Greg Biggins:
Bunche has taken a few other trips but it does sound like UCLA is doing really well with him right now. From talking to a few people on the visit, the comment I heard more than once was, 'this is the biggest guy I've ever seen and he's not sloppy.' UCLA is trying to see if they can get him in to school for the quarter that just started but more than likely, it might be the spring quarter, which would still allow him to take part in spring practice.
Bunch has the versatility to play anywhere on the offensive line minus center and has a ton of ability. He didn't start this past season after starting every game the year before at left tackle but that was reportedly more to do with some issues off the field. Nothing major and UCLA has done their homework and background checks and feel very comfortable with him as a person on and off the field.
According to our Miami site:
After redshirting his first season in 2010, Bunche played in eight games in 2011 and earned a start against Virginia. He then started all 12 games at left tackle in 2012 before losing his starting job as a junior in 2013. Bunche played in 11 games this past season but started just once.
The rising senior was expected to take over one of the starting offensive line spots that are now open thanks to the graduation of three seniors.
Bunche has not yet announced which school he'll attend for the 2014 season but it won't be anyone on Miami's upcoming schedule.
