Auburn, Ala.--With recruiting going into a dead period on Monday football coaches from Auburn and Alabama made their final in-person recruiting visits to spend time with five-star prospect Rashaan Evans.
Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and a large portion of his coaching staff spent time with the Auburn High star and his family on Saturday night at the Clarion Hotel on South College Street where there was a birthday party for the prospect's maternal grandfather.
"It was a great night last night," said Alan Evans, father of the prospect and a former college player himself at Auburn and UT-Chattanooga. "We had an opportunity to spend some time Coach Malzahn and his staff and, of course, Alabama's staff was there, too.
"For Auburn with Coach Malzahn there was Rhett Lashlee, Ellis Johnson, Charlie Harbison, Melvin Smith, Rodney Garner, Dameyune Craig and Scott Fountain," Evans pointed out.
Lashlee is Auburn's offensive coordinator, who recruits Auburn High School for the Tigers. Johnson is AU's defensive coordinator, Harbison coaches the safety and the "star" rover position, the spot Auburn is recruiting Evans to play.
Smith coaches cornerbacks, Garner is the defensive line coach and Auburn's recruiting coordinator, Craig is the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach while Fountain coaches tight ends and H-backs while also coordinating the special teams.
"For Bama it was Kirby Smart, Lance Thompson, Burton Burns and Bo Davis," Evans said.
Smart is Alabama's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Thompson coaches outside linebackers, Burns is a running backs coach and Davis works with the Tide's defensive line.
Rashaan Evans was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game played in Montgomery.
Asked how the party went with the Auburn and Alabama coaching staffs both attending the event, Evans said, "I had never seen that before with two rival teams in the same room, shaking hands and mingling together for one common cause.
"The party was for my wife's father, who was celebrating his 80th birthday," Evans said. "He had a great time. He had an opportunity to have a lot of fun and enjoy his birthday."
Asked what the coaches for the Tigers and Tide told Rashaan and the family, Alan Evans said, "Basically, they told us the same things they have been telling us all along that how they felt like Rashaan could flourish in their system and possibly become a starter one day and an All-American before his career is over. Both of them said that and that they have high regards for him and how he would fit in their system."
Rashaan Evans played both defense and offense for his Auburn High team, which reached the finals of the Class 6A state playoffs in December.
Evans is planning to announce his decision at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Auburn High School with the Tigers, the Tide and UCLA as his final three colleges of interest. He was orginally planning to make a return trip to UCLA over the weekend, but cancelled the trip.
Asked if his son has made up his mind on his college choice, Evans said, "Yes. We're getting close--real close. We have got a few more details we have to get worked out, but other than that we are right there."
Commenting on what he thinks is the most important factor for his son's college choice, Evans said, "I would think how they plan to utilize him at his position and how he feels he will fit in."
