Kirk Talks L.A. Trips

2015 four-star Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro wide receiver Christian Kirk took unofficial visits to both USC and UCLA this past weekend...

Christian Kirk is the top wide receiver out West and ranked the No. 35 overall recruit in the 2015 Scout 100. He combines the hands and route running of a possession type receiver with the explosiveness and deep play threat of a home run hitter. He runs well after the catch, has a strong, athletic body and has been dominant in every elite event he has participated in over the last year.

This past weekend, Kirk spent the weekend in Los Angeles and visited USC and UCLA.

"I flew in Friday and got to USC around 5:00 that night," Kirk said. "I took a tour of the McKay Center and really liked both the football facilities and the academic center. Coach Sark met with me and my family and then we toured the campus. That night, I had dinner with Coach Sirmon and overall, it was a great time to learn about the history and tradition of the program.

"Saturday morning, we got back to USC and saw the Annenberg School of Communication, since that's the field I want to go in to. Their academics and alumni support is amazing. We toured more of the campus and then I met up with Max Browne and we had lunch together.

"I plan to be an early enrollee like Max was so it was cool to talk to him about how that worked for him and get to know him a little. Then we went to the Coliseum and finished the visit with a slide presentation and saw the dorms as well. Overall, it was a great visit, I learned a lot about the school and I have a lot of interest in USC for sure."

Following the visit to USC, Kirk and his family headed straight over to UCLA.

"I got to UCLA around 3:50," Kirk said. "The whole offensive staff plus Coach Mora was there waiting for me. Coach Yarbs, Taylor Mazzone and one of the GA's I know really well, Coach Marsh were all there to greet me. We talked about the program and I got some background on the coaches and then we took a tour.

"It was cool because Coach Mora was my personal tour guide and spent the whole time with me and my parents. We saw the campus, the practice fields and facility. Jalen Ortiz, who I know really well since he's from Arizona, was there too and we hung out quite a bit along with Eldridge Massington.

"I didn't get to meet any of the quarterbacks like I did at USC but I talk to Josh Rosen all the time and I was supposed to meet up with him but he was at the basketball game so I never ran in to him. I didn't get to see much of the academic side but the coaches said they're going to set up a Skype with me, my family and someone in the Communications department and that's a really big deal for my family."

In breaking down the two visits, Kirk said both were great trips and he's strongly considering each school right now.

"I've been to UCLA before and felt very comfortable there," Kirk said. "It was a very relaxed environment and I got that same vibe at USC too. UCLA was my first offer so I already took a visit and have a great feel for the campus and coaches.

"With USC, I learned a lot about the school from a football and academic standpoint and I think I have a strong comfort level at both schools. I'll be back in L.A for the NIKE Camp and I don't have anything set up right now but could take another trip to one or both schools just to check things out again."

In the last 48 hours, Kirk was also offered by Alabama and Georgia and could take visits to both schools as well.

"In the late spring/early summer, I'm thinking about doing an SEC swing through the South," Kirk said. "Those are two schools I could definitely check out and I have a lot of respect for the SEC as a conference. It's arguably the best conference in the country so I have a lot of interest there.

"I've already been to Texas A&M and they're high on my list. I know a lot of people call them my leader but I think that's just because I had a great visit and I'm close with Kyle Allen, who will be there next fall. We talk weekly but he's not trying to recruit me, we're friends so we just talk about how we're doing.

"My parents loved it at A&M too and I really like the coaches a lot. I went on the visit without an offer and the coaches said they would come and see me the first day of spring ball and sure enough, they came out and offered. They're definitely recruiting me harder than anyone and Coach Sumlin has been on campus at least two or three times already so that shows me a lot."

As mentioned, Kirk plans to be an early enrollee but still wants to try and get in as many official visits as he can.

"I want to take all five if possible," Kirk said. "I'm still sorting that out though, i don't have anyone locked in just yet. I think I'll take one to one of the two L.A schools and it's a good bet I'll take on to A&M as well. After that, I'm pretty much open to everyone still.

"I have a visit to Ohio State (Feb. 27), that's the only other unofficial trip I have right now. My goal is to cut my list to 10 going in to the summer. Then after the summer, I'll do another cut and set up my trips. Like I said, right now, I'm still open to everyone and just going through the process and learning as much as I can about all of these schools."
