We saw Spartan tackle Kahlil McKenzie back in early October when De La Salle was down in SoCal to play Anaheim (Calif.) Servite. It didn't take long to see the lineman was a big time talent with a college body, a non-stop motor and the strength to take on a double team and still get a push up field.
He only had three or four offers at the time but it was obvious his stock would soon blow up and that's exactly what happened. McKenzie has blown past the double digit offer mark and plans to be very active on the travel circuit.
"I just visited Duke and that was great," McKenzie said. "My sister goes to school there and I'm definitely interested. I visited before but I got to see a lot more of the school and the campus and even attended a basketball game, which was an incredible experience because of the atmosphere.
"I think the program is definitely on the rise and they have a good thing going right now. Academically, they're hard to beat and I really like the coaching staff a lot. I have a strong comfort level there so I'm definitely going to have them on my list for the long haul."
Speaking of his list, McKenzie recently came out with a top 10 but he's already planning to revise it.
"I did that list way too early," McKenzie said. "That was a rookie mistake, I'm going to wait until the end of the summer and then make a cut. I think by then I'll have a good idea of what schools are really interested in me so that's my plan now.
"Notre Dame just offered me this week and that was a big one for me. They weren't in my top 10 but that's why I need to change that. I talked with Coach Denbrock and Elston and I'm definitely going to try and take a visit out there. I already have a lot of trips set up but I'm going to try and add Notre Dame.
"So far, I've been to USC and Duke and over the next few months, I'm going Oklahoma, Miami, Florida, Tennessee, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State. I still want to take my official visits too so I'm not close to making my decision anywhere. I want to take my time and make sure I'm doing the right thing and after these visits, I think I'll have a good idea what to do."
