With an offer list chalk full of Pac-12 schools, Lakes defensive end Benning Potoae will have his pick of the litter when it comes time to make a decision.
But, the No. 31 ranked defensive end in the nation is taking his time with the recruiting process, going so far as to delay his visits outside of attending camps over the summer for the competition.
"I spoke with my head coach about it," Potoae said. "He told me I should start my visits my senior year."
Potoae said that most of the Pac-12 schools that have offered him also want him to attend one of their offseason camps. He said he can't make all of them, but knows a few that he believes he'll participate at.
"I'm going to the Oregon one again," Potoae said. "I'm going to a camp in Cali, the Nike camp. I might go down to Montana for a camp and then there's this camp in Ohio that I'm debating about traveling to."
During those camps, Potoae made is clear that his goal will be to stand out amongst the pack.
"I'm aware that I'm going against kids that are big, strong and fast, but my expectation that I hold myself to is to separate myself from them," he said. "They may be good, but I will be great."
When discussion turned to which program was staying on him the most at the moment, Potoae said three schools stood out.
"To be honest Washington is recruiting hard, but I believe UCLA and Arizona State are recruiting harder," Potoae said before contemplating further. "Wazzu as well."
With some downtime on his hands before he starts camps, Potoae has been training, focusing on his technique, speed and agility. Because his brother Sione played at Washington over the past four seasons, Benning has been able to make some connections and is now receiving FBS-level instruction.
"I'm training with some of the UW guys," he said. "They're coming on their off time to come see me and I go up there and train with them."
