Darnay Holmes is one of the top 2017 prospects in the region. He saw significant playing time at Oaks Christian this past season but transferred, along with his older brother Darick, to Newbury Park at the semester.
Holmes was one of the top defensive backs we saw at the SoCal NIKE Camp a few weeks back and also impressed in the testing phase with a 4.57-40 and 30" vertical leap. At 5-10, 175 pounds, he has good size, moves very well and is a natural athlete. He looked good at the recent Passing Down 7on7 Tournament and picked up his first scholarship offer over the weekend.
"Our whole 7 on 7 team went down and visited Arizona and Arizona State last weekend," Holmes said. "I had a great time and it was a good experience for me. At ASU, we watched practice and talked to some of the coaches. I knew some of our guys were going to get offered so I was happy for everyone and excited to be a part of that.
"Then we went to Arizona and the coaches showed me and my family a lot of love. They offered Darick and I knew he was going to commit. When he went in to talk to the coaches, one of the guys asked for my tape. They watched it right there and then came back and told me I had an offer so I was definitely excited for that."
While Darick did commit to the Cats, the younger Holmes said he's not close to making an early decision.
"Nah, no way, I still have three years left," Holmes said. "It's great to get that first offer and I'm hoping I'll pick up a few more. I'm hearing a lot from UCLA and I've heard they could be close to offering. I camped there last year and I'm planning to camp there again this summer.
"Stanford is another school I like a lot and would love to hear more from them. I'm an academic guy, that's going to be the biggest factor in my decision, so they're high on my list for sure. It's early though and I'm not going to close any doors right now, I'm just looking forward to going through the process and seeing how it plays out."
This weekend, Holmes will take unofficial visits to Ohio State and Clemson with fellow Team 19 freshman teammate Keyshawn Johnson Jr. Johnson's recruitment has blown up recently and Holmes is a player that everyone might as well offer now too because in a few years, everyone will be on him.
Editors Note- UCLA offered Holmes a few minutes after this article was posted.
