McKenzie Recaps Spring Visits

No player has been more active taking unofficial visits this spring than Concord (Calif.) De La Salle defensive lineman Kahlil McKenzie. In the last week, the tackle has visited UCLA, Tennessee, Arizona State and Arizona...

Kahlil McKenzie is the top defensive tackle out west and a top 50 player nationally. He has taken several unofficial visits already checking out Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Miami, USC and Florida and was back on the road this past week.

"I was at UCLA last Wednesday and loved it there," McKenzie said. "I really like Coach Mora and the whole staff as well. Coach Mora is all about winning and football is a huge priority there. You can tell Coach Mora has his stamp on the program and is improving everything there.

"I toured the campus a little too and talked to some academic people. I met with Coach Angus, the DL coach and he's a really cool guy. I like the guys on the team and how I fit in there. My mom went to UCLA and talks up the school a lot so it was a great trip, I would say it definitely exceeded my expectations."

Next up for McKenzie was a visit to Tennessee. Both his father Reggie and uncle Raleigh played for the Vols so there's some strong family ties.

"The UT was amazing, it felt like home," McKenzie said. "This was actually my first time on campus there but I loved it. I have family in Knoxville and that was probably the biggest highlight for me, just the family feel I had there. I had my mom, brother, both sisters, two cousins an aunt and an uncle all there with me.

"The campus is beautiful, I loved the football facilities and the fans are incredible. In the middle of the campus, they have a giant rock that they actually call, ‘The Rock.' They painted ‘Welcome Home Kahlil on it, it was pretty special and blew me away. I love the coaching staff and the direction the program is going in and like I said, it just felt like home for me."

Next up for McKenzie were visits to Arizona State (Monday) and Arizona (Tuesday).

"I had a great time at ASU," McKenzie said. "I liked everything about the trip. The coaches treated me very well, I liked the football facilities and the overall feel for the campus. They're already done with spring practice so I got to spend a lot more time touring the campus and talking with the coaches and that was cool.

"The coaches are very serious about winning and you can see they're headed in the right direction. They won the Pac 12 South last year and they're recruiting at a high level. The coaches are confident they can take the next step and want me to be a part of that so I'm definitely giving them a hard look."

As for his trip to Tucson;

"Arizona really blew me away, I wasn't expecting that. Everything was my style there- the high energy from the coaches and players, their commitment to winning but also wanting to have fun while doing it. They keep it loose and lighthearted but know how to work as well.

"The Coaches were great, real cool people and I got along great with them. I like the campus a lot and I just had a strong comfort level there. They honestly jumped over a bunch of teams on my list and I'm giving them a hard look right now."

McKenzie will spend Wednesday visiting the Grand Canyon and will then head over to Oregon later this week for his last visit of his whirlwind spring break.

"My plan is to try and cut my list down by the end of the summer," McKenzie said. "I don't know if I'll be able to cut it to five but that would be great if I can. Then I can start planning some of my official visits and I'll most likely wait until close to Signing Day before I make my final decision."
