Four-star Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley offensive tackle Dru Samia was expecting to compete for offers at both USC and UCLA last weekend, but Saturday morning saw the plan change a bit.
"I woke up (Saturday morning) with a message from (UCLA Offensive Line) Coach Adrian Klemm asking me to call him," Samia said. "So, I called him and he said, 'We're going to offer you before you come in to the camp so you can be relaxed and not feel like you're competing for an offer.'"
The offer was a big one, with UCLA being the talk of the Samia family for a long time.
"My sister used to always talk about UCLA," Samia said. "How great it was and how she always wanted to go there. This was her dream school. She would always talk to me about it, saying 'I love UCLA, I want to go to UCLA.' So it's great to finally get this offer and get this opportunity."
There was some thought that Samia, who is likely a UCLA lean after earning the offer, could commit fairly soon, but he says that's unlikely.
"I haven't gotten a chance to sit down and talk with my family about it and I haven't even gotten a chance to take a full tour of the facilities," Samia said. "I want to get a full feel. I think a commitment to whatever school will come after my season. I'll probably narrow it down before my season or after my preseason, but you can expect UCLA to be in there definitely. This has been a top school for me for a long time."
Klemm, who offered Samia as a guard/tackle with the ability to play both positions in UCLA's scheme, has done a good job building a relationship with Samia.
"Our relationship is great," Samia said. "He's a nice guy, a very good coach. He gives me a lot of information and he knows what he's talking about. He played in the League. He's a great coach."
As for other schools on the list, Samia is playing it close to the vest.
"Right now, everyone is equal," Samia said. "I'm going to sit down with my parents to talk about it. When I narrow it down, I'll officially say what schools are in the mix."
Though he declined to name other schools that could be contenders for him, he did say that the only official visit he's sure he'll take right now is to UCLA.
