Four-star San Leandro (Calif.) cornerback/receiver Stephen Johnson committed to UCLA on Tuesday at The Opening, which came as a bit of a surprise as the buzz had Oregon leading as recently as Tuesday morning.

Johnson, who is being recruited primarily as a slot receiver at UCLA, will immediately fill the need for a speedy playmaker on offense. Johnson clocked a 4.37 in the 40 at the SPARQ combine, making him the fastest of UCLA's slot targets at the event.

Johnson could also play on the defensive side of the ball, and Scout.com currently has him ranked as the No. 30 cornerback in the country.

Landing Johnson would not preclude UCLA picking up another elite playmaker at receiver. Both Christian Kirk and Ryan Newsome are still on the board for UCLA, among others, and both players will compete alongside Johnson all week at The Opening.

UCLA still has another potential commitment to come this week, with offensive tackle Andre James expected to announce for the Bruins on Thursday.
