Dru Samia was one of the top offensive tackle performers at The Opening 2014 on Tuesday and had a strong workout. He played all right tackle and was physically dominant.
Samia is a strong player and can overpower most rush ends. He’s working hard on his overall agility and specifically, his ability to move laterally. He offers the versatility to play guard as well as tackle and is clearly one of the elite lineman out West.
“The experience has been great for me, it’s a real blessing to be out here,” Samia said. “You can’t get coaching like this anywhere and you can’t get competition like this anywhere as well.
“Going through all the drills with the guys, you realize there are three star guys competing with four star guys and five star guys. Once you’re out on the field though, it doesn’t matter what you’re ranked. Everyone has two hands, two feet, everyone is human and I don’t feel overwhelmed at all.”
On the recruiting front, Samia left open the possibility of making an early decision.
“I took a lot of trips and did some camps and it has been a tiring process,” Samia said. “I’m thinking about moving up my commitment date but still need to sit down and talk things over with my family first.
“UCLA is definitely recruiting me the hardest right now. I feel at home there and I really like Coach Klemm a lot. The whole coaching staff is great and very instructional.
“They know what they’re talking about and Coach Klemm played in the League and he knows what it takes to get there. I also love the area and the location is great, not too far from home but still far enough to where I feel like I’m getting away.”
Samia did say he’s interested in a pair of Big 12 programs right now.
“I really want to visit Oklahoma and Texas is showing new interest as well,” Samia said. “OU hasn’t offered but wants me to come out for an unofficial. Hopefully they offer if I go out there, they haven’t made any promises but that would be a great offer to have.
