Perhaps the most anticipated event of The Opening are the one on one battles in the trenches between the offensive and defensive linemen. Today was not a disappointment as it was best on best to close out the event.
Scout.com has the top five performers on the defensive line from Thursday's event.
Seffner (Fla.) Armwood defensive lineman Byron Cowart lined up at defensive end and defensive tackle, and he lined up on the right side and the left side. He used an array of moves, including a swim and spin, and showed exceptional foot quickness and speed off the edge.
Concord (Calif.) Clayton Valley defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie was a machine. His strength allowed him to win rep after rep, and he did a great job with hands and winning the leverage battle. Once he locked his arms, the rep was over.
Class of 2016 defensive tackle Rashan Gary of Paramus (N.J.) Catholic was named the No. 1 prospect in the class during the event, and he showed why he is so deserving. He got off the line well, disengaged from a block on one occasion and exploded into the backfield. He showed off his speed and competitive fire, and he did a good job of dipping his shoulder and gaining leverage.
Breiden Fehoko of Honolulu Farrington was physical and showcased his strength from the defensive tackle position. He has quick hands and was able to keep offensive linemen off of him. On one rep, he blew past four-star offensive lineman Matthew Burrell so quickly the Woodbridge (Va.) C.D. Hylton standout didn't even get a hand on him.
Gardena (Calif.) Serra's Rasheem Green was dominant most of the day, and had a tremendous battle with Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral offensive lineman Keenan Walker in the "Final Five" competition. Green won all three reps, and did so on the first by using speed to the outside and then shifting inside, the second with an inside move and the third with speed around the edge.
