Video Interview with K.J. Costello:
Story by Greg Biggins
K.J. Costello has had a great spring and just keeps getting better every time we see him. He led the Eagles to the semi-finals in what was easily the strongest tournament field in SoCal this summer. Costello showed off his strong, powerful arm, was very accurate and showed great leadership skill all tourney long.
In a head to head matchup with Westlake and fellow 2016 standout quarterback Malik Henry, Costello may have had the best game of any signal caller all day. He led his team to five straight touchdown drives and was clearly motivated by the opportunity to go head to head with a quarterback he'll be linked to over the next two years.
On the recruiting front, Costello took several unofficial visits to out of the region schools last month and will now focus a little closer to home.
"I talked to Coach Mazzone (UCLA OC) last week," Costello said. "I camped there a few weeks ago and he said he was really impressed with my performance. They already have (Josh) Rosen locked in for 2015 but he said they want a big time guy in the '16 class as well.
"Me and my dad are coming up on the 25th to meet with Coach Mora and hopefully I'll come away with an offer. It would be great if that happened. I know they have Josh and he's a great player but no matter where I go, I would have to beat out a player like that. I'm not going to sit here and say it doesn't affect me having a guy like him right in front of me because early playing time is big for me but like I said, I know I have to compete wherever I go."
Costello will also check out Stanford next week.
"I'm going to visit Stanford on the 26 for their Under the Lights Camp," Costello said. "There was some confusion between us last month when I was on my southern tour. They had a camp and were expecting me to throw there but I wasn't able to do it since I was touring those schools in the MW and South.
"I camped at Stanford last year and they have a great program. I love the academics and everything about the school. I talked to coach Bloomgren just a few days ago and he told me they really want to see me. He said they have three '16 kids they really like and already saw the other two and want to see me so I'll be out there and we'll see how it goes."
Costello also has a good relationship with Coach Helton at USC and stays in constant contact with the Trojan coaches.
"I talked to Coach Helton last week too," Costello said. "We connect really well and he's always straight up with me. He told me they're still trying to get their 2015 QB situation figured out and I know they just offered Sam Darnold. I don't know if they're going to take two quarterbacks this year or what but I know they what one in my class.
"Sark told me to just be patient and they would let me know where I was at after week 1 or 2 of the season. They have seen me a lot and told me I didn't even need to go to the Rising Stars Camp because they already know what I can do. I'm not in any hurry so I don't mind being patient and letting things play out."
As for his tour of schools in the South and MW that took him to six different colleges, Costello mentioned a couple that really stood out.
"Alabama was an unreal trip," Costello said. "Nick Saban and that school itself is just top of the line in every way. Football is crazy there, it's a special place for sure and I was really impressed. I loved Michigan too. That's a big time program, I like the coaches a lot and their academics are right there with Stanford so I was really impressed.
"Right now, I'm just taking everything in. These trips are great and you can get amped up and emotion after each one. I don't want to make a knee jerk reaction and commit anywhere too soon. Everyone keeps telling me to take my time and go through the process. At the same time, other people will say it's good to lock your spot in and make sure you get your first choice. I'm just trying to be patient and smart about everything and let the process play out."
