Over the last several years, 6-foot-8, 200-pound Clovis (Calif.) Buchanan 2016 power forward Donovan Mitchell has split between basketball and volleyball.
Due to the fact that he was spending so much time between sports - along with the fact that he's grown over two inches in the last year - Mitchell's basketball development has been a little tougher to track than the normal prospect, but his size, length, athleticism and feel for the game give him a lot of upside.
Moving forward, Mitchell will only be playing basketball.
"This was my last year of volleyball," Mitchell said. "I just finished junior nationals and now I'm done. I'm focusing on basketball. I knew it was coming - I knew I wouldn't play volleyball the rest of my life - so I wanted to stop now and focus on basketball 100%."
With volleyball in his rearview, Mitchell has begun putting all eggs into the basketball basket and he's happy with his progress.
"My game is coming along pretty well," he said. "I've gotten a lot better with my shooting and ball handling. My next step is foot speed and defense."
Mitchell listed interest from Texas, Washington, Washington State, Arizona, Arizona State, California, Fresno State, San Diego State, Connecticut, Tulsa, Colorado State, USC and UCLA, with a handful of schools showing the most attention.
"Arizona State, Washington, Washington State, Texas, UCLA and USC are recruiting me the hardest," Mitchell said.
The rising junior recently took one unofficial visit and has planned a few others.
"I went to Cal to see them because I was 10 minutes away from them and I liked it a lot," Mitchell said. "In August I'm going to see UCLA and USC. Right after Las Vegas I'm going to visit Washington."
It's early in his recruiting process, but style of play will have an impact on Mitchell's ultimate decision.
"I'm looking for a team that likes to run a lot because I like to run up and down the court," he said.
