Swanigan Motivated to Make USA Team
Five-star center Caleb Swanigan was a late addition to the USA Basketball U-17 tryouts, but on night one he more than proved his worth. Now the Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Homestead standout is motivated to make the team and on the recruiting trail he keeps adding offers. “It is a great experience to be playing against these guys,” said Swanigan of USA Basketball. “You see these faces everywhere but some of them I haven’t played against because some play adidas and some play Under Armour, but this is USA Basketball where all the best players are here going against each other.” Swanigan was dominant at the Peach Jam leading the event in rebounding, and as would be expected college coaches were impressed. He came into the event with offers from schools such as Indiana, Michigan State, Alabama, Marquette, Illinois, Kansas, Georgetown, UCLA, and others. Schools such as Virginia, Kentucky, and Kansas State came in with offers following the event. About the offer from Kentucky, Swanigan said, “Kentucky has been on me for a while. It was back in February or March they said they would take my commitment, but we never really said it was an offer. It is great to have an offer from them, they send a lot of guys to the NBA and they have one of the best programs.” Swanigan isn’t as familiar with Virginia, but now that he has the offer he is going to give them a serious look. “I don’t know a ton about Virginia, but they are in the ACC and that is a top dog conference,” said Swanigan. “I really have to look into them and see what they are all about.” Michigan State has been one of the programs after Swanigan for a while, and he is very comfortable with the situation in East Lansing. “They have a good staff,” said Swanigan of the Spartans. “I have been up there a couple of times and the campus is in a great area which isn’t too far from Ft. Wayne. I like Coach (Tom) Izzo and the guys on the team as well.” Another school that has offered and has been in touch is UCLA. “UCLA is a good school and they have been talking to me a lot,” said Swanigan. “I have family out West, so if I went to the Pac 12 they would be able to see me play which would be nice.” While Michigan hasn’t yet offered, the Wolverines have been in close contact, and Swanigan says they plan to be monitoring him closely the remainder of the month. “Michigan is pretty good,” said Swanigan. “I know Coach (John) Beilein should be out here tomorrow to watch me, and we have been communicating a lot.” Currently Swanigan is viewed as the No. 7 center and the No. 12 prospect overall in the 2015 class.
