It's been an interesting, eventful summer for Jean Marc Christ Koumadje, the 7'3 center out of Montverde Academy in Florida. He's received offers from Connecticut, UCLA, Georgia Tech, Washington, USC, Florida State, and several others. Dozens of head coaches from elite schools were in attendance at his games.
It's easy to see why he's drawn so much interest: at 7'3, he has legitimate size, and he runs the floor well for that height. The issue for him is simply that he hasn't been playing the game long, and he acknowledges that he simply needs more reps.
"This is just my second year of playing basketball," Koumadje said. "I need to improve everything. I need to get better at rebounding, shooting, everything."
In order to get more reps, he and his support circle are considering a move to Village Christian in Sun Valley.
"It's still not certain that the move will happen," Koumadje said. "The main goal is to move so I can get more playing time and gain more experience in the game."
Koumadje has appeared in several AAU events throughout the spring and summer and he said he can already notice differences in his game as he's gotten more playing time.
"I think I've improved," Koumadje said. "I'm running the floor better, shooting a little better, and I know what's happening better. I just need to continue."
Koumadje said that he was actually a soccer player growing up, and he said that much of his athletic ability on the court could be attributed to his development as a soccer player.
The focus for Koumadje has been improving his game, and as such he hasn't given much thought to college recruiting. He named Georgia Tech as one of the schools talking to him the most, but said that he hasn't given any thought to favorites yet.
"I know Georgia Tech, Connecticut, a few others have been talking to me a lot," Koumadje said. "UCLA has talked to me, and their head coach has told me he really likes me."
Koumadje said he had no visits planned, but there's some talk that Connecticut could earn a visit soon. If the transfer to Village Christian goes through, which appears very likely, one can expect that visits to UCLA, USC, and Pepperdine will take place.
"I don't know when I want to make a decision," Koumadje said. "I'm focused on getting better right now, not college."
