The Injury Report

UCLA has dealt with injuries at many positions during fall camp, but the injury bug has struck most heavily along the offensive line...

UCLA is just a week and a half into fall camp, but already the team has been hit by a significant amount of injuries, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The Bruins probably don't have quite as many guys sitting out right now as they did two years ago, during the first trip to San Bernardino, but in a year where UCLA seems primed to compete for the Pac-12 Title and the College Football Playoffs, the injuries are becoming a worry.

Unit by Unit Injury Tally
Note: we're including some injuries that were sustained before fall camp to give an accurate picture of the current depth.

Quarterback: None

Running Back: Jordon James (hamstring, back in practice)

Wide Receivers: Austin Roberts (ACL injury during summer workouts, out for season), Thomas Duarte (minor leg injury, still sitting out), Kenny Walker (undisclosed, sitting out), Devin Lucien (head, sitting out), Mossi Johnson (shoulder, in no-contact red jersey), Darren Andrews (knee, out for season), Alex Van Dyke (groin, hasn't held him out).

Offensive Line: Jake Brendel (MCL issue, thought to be minor but sitting out), Alex Redmond (extreme heat symptoms, sitting out), Simon Goines (bone spurs in ankle, out for at least five or six weeks), Scott Quessenberry (undisclosed injury, out indefinitely, but not expected to be more than a few weeks), Carl Hulick (undisclosed, sitting out), Conor McDermott (nagging shoulder injury, limited in practice), Najee Toran (minor injury, back in practice), Sam Tai (ACL, out for year), Caleb Benenoch (knee tendonitis, still in practice), Malcolm Bunche (groin, sat out one practice, but is back)

Defensive Line: Ellis McCarthy (sore calf, has sat out all of fall practice)

Linebackers: Zach Whitley (concussion/whiplash, sitting out), Cameron Griffin (shoulder, out for camp)

Defensive Backs: Randall Goforth (shoulder, back in practice), Marcus Rios (head, sitting out), Johnny Johnson (shoulder, out for year).

On the offensive side of the ball, UCLA has 11 scholarship players currently out of practice. Defensively, five scholarship players are down. Obviously, the most significant issue is the offensive line, which has dealt with injuries/limitations to every single player who was first string on the first day of camp.

It's obviously important to get as many of those guys back as soon as possible, but it's equally important to not suffer any more significant injuries along the line. Brendel's knee is thought to be minor, so the hope is that he'll be back for Virginia or Memphis. Redmond, once he gets out of the heat, should recover and be ready to go for the opener. If those two guys come back, UCLA's offensive line should be in fairly good shape for the opener, but depth is razor thin right now, and they really can't afford any more injuries.
