UCLA Prospect Preview: Early Kickoffs

AUG. 22 -- The prep football season kicks off this weekend with a select few games around the country, including one in Hawaii that features a UCLA commit on each team...

Game of the Week: Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco vs. Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis
It's a rare out-of-state matchup that features two players that are ranked No. 1 at their position. And both are UCLA commits. The No. 3 team in the preseason Scout poll, St. John Bosco, puts their 16-game winning streak on the line when they visit the Islands to take on the Crusaders. Fred Ulu-Perry, the top center prospect nationally, who's committed to UCLA, anchors the St. Louis offensive line and also plays on the defensive line. The Crusaders also boast four-star 2016 receiver Drew Kobayashi and sleeper 2015 quarterback Ryder Kuhns. The Braves, won the CIF State Open Division title last year in California are led by the nation's top quarterback, Josh Rosen, who could be taking snaps from Ulu-Perry in college, but will try to play rude guests in this game. The Braves have a slew of stars in their sophomore and junior classes too, namely four-star 2016 running back Sean McGrew.

Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman vs. Phoenix (Ariz.) Brophy Prep at 7 p.m.
In a key out-of-state matchup, one of several for Bishop Gorman, the Gaels travel to Arizona to take on traditional power Brophy Prep. While Brophy may be down some compared to years past, they do feature 2016 Scout 300 defensive end Connor Murphy, who's older brother Trent was an all-American at Stanford. The Gaels have one current UCLA commit, five-star tight end Alize Jones and also feature another UCLA target, four-star receiver Cordell Broadus. Plus, they're loaded with underclassmen that UCLA will likely watch including defensive end Michael Geraghty in the 2016 class and 2017 receiver Tyjon Lindsey.

Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton at American Fork (Utah) at 7 p.m.
Between Brighton and AF there are 9 prospects with D1 offers, including the top 2015 and 2016 prospects in the state of Utah. Five-star outside linebacker, Osa Masina, is the main draw Friday night. Masina narrowed his offer list of 20+ down to 5 over the summer and is now focusing his attention on Arizona State, Michigan, UCLA, USC, and Wisconsin. Masina does it all for Brighton, he is their running back, linebacker, and even returns kicks. Masina is not the only draw though. American Fork offensive guard, James Empey, is one of the top guards out West. Empey has nearly 10 offers, but seems to be focusing on BYU, Boise State, Utah, Utah State, and Washington. Brighton also features 2016 four-star wide receiver, Simi Fehoko, 2016 three-star safety Drew Jensen, and 2016 three-star quarterback Kahi Neves.

Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy vs. Buford (Ga.) at 6 p.m. EST on Saturday
Trinity Christain Academy is loaded with elite prospects headed all over the place, including middle linebacker Victor Alexander, a longtime UCLA commit. But he's not the only one the Bruins want, with UCLA also pursuing outside linebacker Jeff Holland and trying to get a visit from LSU commit Kevin Toliver. UCLA has also offered 2017 cornerback Shaun Wade and 2016 running back Jalen Buie.

Herriman (Utah) vs. West Jordan (Utah)
UCLA offensive line commit Andre James and his Mustangs teammates get their 2014 season underway with an opener against West Jordan.
