Matthews Survives, Long IR'ed, Acho Cut

Friday night provided a startling twist to the linebacker situation, with another Oregon alum as the beneficiary.

Bad news, Casey Matthews-haters.

The fourth-year linebacker has overcome long odds to make the 53-man roster, with a little help from unfortunate circumstances.

Outside linebacker Travis Long, who received extensive work at the inside position this summer, was lost for the season with ACL tear Thursday night against the Jets. Long seemingly had a beat on both Matthews and Emmanuel Acho to make the roster, able to float about the linebacking corps with valuable versatility.

It's not clear at what point in the game Long tore his ACL, or that he had even torn it at all, so Friday night's news reads as a shock.

Shortly after Long was announced to be headed onto injured reserve, Acho was released, ensuring Matthews' fourth season on the Eagles defense and special teams.
